Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

That's disgustingly tidy. You should be ashamed of yourself!

You have to give the working man a break--he hasn't had years of full-time retirement tinkering to mound up the clutter.

erm... When I was a youngster - around the time I started secondary school - my dad used to take old valve tellys to bits to get the components. I used to help, of course. He was red/green colour blind so I had the job of sorting out resistors and checking the colour codes for him. I still have some of those old carbon resistors. :)  I have a feeling that I still have a couple of the old paxolin valve bases that we removed too. I know for certain that I still have some of the valves. :)

I find some of these Pictures Highly disturbing and some very Comforting.

I am a Filthy grot. I just cannot do neat and tidy. The harder I try, the more I fail at it.  I'm not happy or proud of it, it causes me a lot of grief and self loathing.
All my friends are neatness freaks compared to me so that causes embarrassment as well.

Last year after reading up, I went to the most expensive and highly recommended Hypnotist in the area to see if my failing could be rectified or at least improved.
Had a phone conversation with him, Yes, that is a reasonable and correctable problem, no worries so I booked in.

I will just say that I am sure this therapy could be effective for those that believe everything they hear in the media or readily fall for obvious scams but a significant waste of time and money for me.  I needed to be hit over the head with a hammer not told soothing, motivational sweet nothings.

I wanted badly for this to work but it was not what I expected in any way and despite trying to keep an open mind afterwards and recorded the session and then played it back at home several times, clearly it was not effective on me. I so wish it had achieved something though but not one sign have I seen.

I still want to be neat and tidy but I just have to face that it's not in my skill set and just have to do the best I can, hopeless as that is.

Maybe there are some other people out there like me that neat and tidy escapes and I'm not the only one out there.

@Davo99
I sympathise. However, there may be some improvement merely by restricting the amount of area that you are allowed to use for a particular thing, such as playing with electronics. I have very little space to work in, but I just have to be imaginative.

How many people do you know who choose a bench power supply primarily based on how little bench space it takes up?  :)

Please don't feel too terrible about your untidiness. Some of us are quite simply born that way and we just have to learn how to muddle through it. :)

My messy workroom, complete with trip hazards, note the late 1930's 5 gate processor on the bench in the foreground, it does a good job of simulating an AM radio.

It is the responsibility of the apprentice to keep the room tidy, unfortunately he is a bit of a dud as he sleeps on the job.

Hi Mick (the other one,)

I chose my bench PSU based on its shape, ie. how much stuff can I pile on top of it?

Regards,

Mick

That cat photo is so cute!

@ Davo99 and others worried about tidyness: The messier the workspace, the better the work.

But seriously, don't worry about it.  I find I am constantly fighting a battle between tidyness and the need to spread stuff out to find a few square inches of bench, to work on the next thing!

My parents bought me a wonderful plaque thing for my wall years ago when I was in my 20's as a birthday present.  It read: "The ceiling is tidy, I'll do the rest later."
Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Truly excellent! :)

I'm just in the process of updating/upgrading my power supply. I've doubled it's size from 100x76x40 high to 100x80x76 high and fitted a fan (hopefully to be temperature controlled soon) as these things can warm up quite a bit under load. I'm also going to change the Chinese PSU module for one of the newer ones with a much bigger display. I've also fitted feet to the front edge to tilt it back and lift the air inlet holes clear of the bench. I'd been looking round for a new power supply but there are few that are small enough and most of those are quite expensive.
Shopping list:
Power brick - 3 UKP from a junk sale
PSU module - 13.62 UKP from ebay
Fan guard - 1.79 UKP from ebay
Thermistor - 2.20 UKP for 5 from ebay
Feet - 40p for a box of knitting needle stitch holders plus a bit of double sided tape.

I already had the two ABS boxes, terminals & power socket. The boxes are available on ebay for 5.96 UKP (and more) each but they were nowhere near that price when I bought several of then 40 years ago!

In another life way back, I was an area manager for a retail Chain.
I remember the old guy whom i took over from and hand picked me for the job telling me he looked at 2 things when he visited a shop, how the front of the shop looked and how the back looked.

He said he prefered the front reasonably tidy and the back reasonably messy.
His position was if the back was tidy, then they had too much time on their hands and there wasn't enough going on out the front where the money was made.
He said places that were always perfectly neat and tidy Front and back were never making money.

He said the most untidy shops were the ones that did the best because a good flow of customers through the place tearing things apart was more than the staff could keep up with  and so as long as the money was in the till, he didn't care if the merchandise was laying on the floor.

No money in the till and the place looked like a Cyclone went though it, his boot would be wedged snug and warm up someones nether regions.

I found that to be true in a lot of things.
If there is too much neatness going on which takes time and effort, it means that there is not enough time and effort being spent on the work. When one is busy and trying to get things done, organization is not the most important thing to be concerned with.

That's fine in business, for me though it just means  I'm an untidy bastard that has no excuse other than another mental defect. :0(

Not "mental defect", just a different outlook on priorities, that's all. Neither approach is "right" or "wrong". If you can find the things you want, or at least have a good idea where to look, it doesn't matter. In fact, many "messy" people have better mental indexing than "tidy" people, who can't find something if they (or someone else) accidentally move it to the wrong place.

The only real problem for "messy" people is in finding a big enough clear area to work in. :)
