Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

one of the guys on here used to use a wind turbine to compress air and store it in tanks. Might be worthwhile trying that, if you don't get around to finishing the boiler.

A few years ago for a laugh I decided to turn a 160cc 2 stroke lawn mower engine into an air compressor. all I did was used plastic steel(epoxy) to block off the exhaust and put in 2 air fittings with ball bearings and springs to make a pair of one way valves. Silly me broke the piston rings trying to put the motor back together so i machined up some new ones. That converted motor worked for about 12 months providing air powered from a vintage 4 stroke motor as the power source. one day the rings had turned and got caught on the internal ledge and seized up. I did prove the concept worked but aint got around to finding another donor motor and since bought an elcheapo compressor from bunnings.

Bryan,

What sort of CFM did you get out of the lawnmower motor and what pressure, as i could do with a high volume medium pressure compressor.

Should you have a use for a small compressor i have a 3cuf compressor (belt drive) here doing nothing should you want it. ( compressor only no tank or motor etc.) I was going to make a vacuum pump out of it, but since got a vac pump so no use for it now, and its really too small in output for anything i can use it for.

Pete.
Sometimes it just works

first run on steam

Hi, making progress. I have to add a water pump and insulate the system to increase run time.

Hi, I used JB weld epoxy to fabricate the additional lowbs on the cam of the 4 stroke. It did not last long, I was able to scrape it off with my finger nail. It just can't take the heat. I have to refabricate the additional lowbs. It was a good learning experience.
