I'm a U.S. Army Veteran so I sleep in a card board box with one end partly open.'' now really mine is a wood framed double wide with hard board siding shingles on the roof.
Bubs is a house trailer with a double roof the original roof is steel new one is wood and shingles and Aluminum siding, seems to be hard getting some signals in and out.
The distance if I put it up by the house probably 30 feet if I put it out at the mill tower from my computer room 100 feet.Bub's will be 100 feet or less
Im thinking we are building two of these.
Bub has one I bought him at a farm supply store that is very unreliable.
Bub and I have 2,11 meter radio's and some others.''

Errrr, Hangovers i think.

Its hard to type with a beer in both hands.

Good beer drinking weather here, 39C today and 43C tomorrow, one needs to keep their fluids up.

And the rain causes a pain and its coming again now its flooded all the plain, and it does wonders for setalight communications as well, been flooded in for a week but finally got out yesterday to go to a family BBQ.
Got the Puter going again yesterday till the magic smoke came out of the power supply, humidity I think, it is now running of the DC power supply pending a 20 volt down converter to run it direct of the batteries, fun and games all round.

All the best

Bob, i dont know anyone on this planet that has more puter problems than you.

Are you sure its no the NNNNNNN_Er? blackfellow rigged wiring you have causing the problens with the puter

It would seem you have more down time than me on a Sunday nap.

Although good you are back in link with the eye in the sky again. (starting to worry you were off line so long)

Happy new year .........should you drop out B4 hand.

Hi Pete & Charlie

Still got the magnetic boots on so no worries there, the Puter problem is a result of using a laptop Noah used in the Ark to do inventory on stock food and natural increase in mouths to feed.

The rain yielded nearly 11 inches over a week and the ground is like jelly, totally saturated, but with a few sunny days the grass will take up the excess moisture.

It was so wet that Rodger, my pensioner dog wouldn't get out of his bed, cause he doesn't like wet feet. They said on the local news that there is 2 billion dollars in damage to roads and infrastructure in Queensland and all the market gardens are flooded so looks like I go on a diet for a while.

Got a few feral rabbits down the back and the odd kangaroo, and a huge python called Monty that lives on wallabies, plenty of wild tomatoes and the grapes are ripening, as long as the fungus doesn't get them.

The whiskey is still in the fridge and I wouldn't spill that on the Puter. I keep it in the fridge to save on water as I don't have to add ice to it. Thats my bit for conservation, although a bit meaningless at the moment.

Don't need a roof over the Sat dish in the SH as the raindrops are non magnetic.

May we all have a better year next year as it's only hours away now.

All the best

Where did you go Pete?
We need to know what to look for as transmitter's and receivers.
I think we have most of the other stuff rounded up.
may get some pictures as we go.

Hi Isaiah.

Got my magnetic shoes back on.

The wireless TX and RX modules i used are of 434mhz type and are the cheap crappy ones but they work rather well once you get the bugs out of the setup.

They can have issues with distance and interferance from other things on the same frequency, but are cheap enough to play with and learn from.

Im not sure where you go shopping for electronic parts in your neck of the woods.

I looked up Sparksfun and found the same sort i used, but see the 434mhz RX are out of stock, they do have 315mhz and they should work fine.

Here is a couple of links to the 434mhz TX & RX modules

http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8950

http://www.sparkfun.com/products/8946

If you have a pocket full of gold and wish to use a far better module than have a look at the Xbee modules, i have not used them but others i know have, give them a good rating.

Are you guys able to make a circuit board or will you use vero board for the setup.

Pete.

PS. see Gizmos latest edition to the piclog as he has added these wireless modules.Edited by Downwind 2011-01-04

Pete
Ill have a look and let Bub decide what he thinks we can use for TX & RX.
We will use vero board or pc board.
We do most of our shopping for these things on line.
Bub has several places he gets electronic parts from.
We have Radio Shack but they don't have and don't know anything except selling cell phones.
And we recycle a lot of stuff ''
Looks like Ill have to start machining on them this week!

Pete;

You are going to wind teaching preschool here,
How ever I did get a picaxe beginners kit assembled over the week end.
We will be using vero board or pc board for now, I know its not the best for some projects and should be good enough to learn with.
I will look at the links above first chance I get.

Thanks for your help.
Bob

Looks like you have made the first step.....lighting a led, it gets easier from here.

Vero board is fine , just remember when it comes to the wireless modules to keep the antenna track length as short as practical, as long tracks can introduce noise into the circuit and the track is also counted as antenna length too.

The reason i asked about making circuit boards was i had done a PCB design for the receiver end, for the data logger that you could have used.

There is not much on the board anyway and will be 10 minutes work for a bloke like you to assemble on vero board.

Its best to chop some 8 pin IC sockets in half, and use them for sockets to plug the wireless modules into, rather than soldering the modules direct to the board.

Then you can move them around as needed should you have several test boards.

Preschool.....?? that will be a little like the blind leading the blind.

Pete
Ive got some machining started on the outside unit .
What all will we have to put in it?
I think Im going to use the motor out of a old vcr and was wondering what that is inside the motor each side has a disk with coils of copper wire looks to be a break or something?Bub has pictures if he puts them up of this.
will we put the transmitter in the outside unit? an amplifier and the octicoupler units??

Think you will find the coils you refer to are a mini stator arrangement that is the windings for the motor itself.

Either way the coils need to be stripped out so all that remains is just the bearings and the outer head casting.

I only placed the interupter disc and sensor in my anemometer section and run the wires down to a box with the electronics mounted in it lower down the pole.

I found if the antenna for the transmitter was to close to the spinning mass of the anemometer it caused interfearence with the transmition.

Also the antenna needs to be away from the pole, as any metal in close proximity will effect the signal

If you can remove some of the mass of the video head to reduce the weight without upsetting the balance it would be good, as a heavy mass will effect the response of the anemometer.

Here are the pic's Isaiah took of the vcr whats it thing. There seems to be a pickup of sorts still in the vcr we didn't get pic's of; the bearings are very smooth and easy to turn.

Pete,
What I intend to do is I have a hard drive disk turned to fit inside my pvc cap the disk has about a 1 1/2 inch hole in it I am planning on turning the bearing holder to fit that disk. then the other side of the motor ill turn to fit the octi coupler and the other end of the shaft will be hooked to the cups.See Bub's pictures I wasnt sure what those black disks with the wire in was. thought it may have been a counter of some sort? Oh well You guys are the electricians,I just let the smoke out!

Don't know what the disc/coils are for and would remove them to reduce any weight.

If you call a man with a soldering iron and screwdriver a electrician than perhaps i am, but didn't think so.

As for letting the smoke out, i have a nice 240 x 128 LCD display here with a smoke escape hole in one chip that was a whoops.
So dont feel special with your ability to de-smoke things.

Ok thats the way Ill proceed with the project .
I thought there may have been a chance that it was a counter of some sort and wouldn't need the opti coupler.
I think I like the idea of putting the transmitter down from the unit.
But will have to make it weather proof.
Im a ways behind you and Bub in electronics's I can change a light bulb and fuse pretty good. The smoke comes I carry it to Bub.
He has to see if he can put the smoke back in my Yaesu 2800 ''it wasnt even turned on!

It would appear i had a senior moment when i tested the optical sensor earlier and posted that the output swung between 0 volts and 0.3 volts, this is not correct the output of the optical sensor swings between 0 volts and 3 volts.

So no conditioning of the signal is required and it can be feed direct to the picaxe input with a 10K pullup resistor tieing the pin high to +5 volts.

The reason for the mistake was some silly bugger here had the Cro set to 10X when testing.

Its always nicer when a mistake allow you to reduce the chips in a circuit rather than needing to add them.
