Losing the internal editor would, for me, ruin the entire "boot to BASIC" computer thing. If the only programming choice is an IDE then you may as well stick to Python or use an Arduino or PIC chip. They all have excellent IDEs available. There's nothing to differentiate them in that respect.

The internal editor isn't perfect. It's not ideal. It can even be awkward and downright infuriating at times. However, it's part of the package - and exactly what you would expect from a 1980's home computer (only better in most respects). That's no reason to get rid of it.

Agreed. I love the built in editor. I wrote all of Heliblaster in it.

MMEdit is a great addition, but it's an option for "slightly" more advanced/experienced users. You can't beat that power on straight to BASIC vibe when you just want to much around.
