Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Plasma,
I have also recycled 2 old Laptop displays by using similar AliExpress LCD adapters/drivers.
https://www.thebackshed.com/forum/ViewTopic.php?TID=14650&PID=183631#183631#183631
One of the displays has been powered continously for about 1.5 years. Most of the time in stand-by mode. Not seen any problems sofar.
12V power to the LCD adapter and 5V out that directly powers the PicoMiteVGA.
The adapters were supplied with small remote controls. When the display is swithed on, the Pico starts with the same keypress.

Mixtel90 said  From the comments buyers aren't seeing a USB device when they take power from USB. Whether it needs a special driver (not supplied and no link to one) who knows?

It doesn't appear as any kind of USB for me.

Using USB-A from laptop to USB-C on LCD, with Linux it doesn't enumerate or anything as regards USB.

So... no touch I reckon.

OTOH it's probably in effect a USB-C charging-only cable (sorry, USB-C has my brain somewhat fried).

John,
VGA #1
VGA #2

These are the board I have used. They were both for old LCDs with high voltage neon backlight.
The first step is to open the laptop display and find the type number of the display.
Then you can try to find a supporting board on AE. Message with the potential seller and ask for their suggestions. At least from one of the sellers I got 3 different proposals for that particular LCD. Believe I took the cheapest.

Hmmm...
If you only need a small display it's cheaper to buy one than to recycle a laptop display by the looks of things.

So does the TV go through a tuner (or some chips) and turn into USB or what?

(I guess some software has to select the frequency of interest.)

I have no idea about what comes out via USB, except for +5V. (Neither any idea about what can be input to the USB.
The TV tuner works as a standard TV with the remote control included in the LCD adapter package. Searching and storing channels by the remote control.
I did only try the TV a couple of times about 2 years ago, but it was a fully functional TV.

The USB socket is usually for a USB drive / stick.
The most basic ones only support firmware update.
Others can play various media files and some can also record DTV.
Using the remote to search the Menu pages will reveal its capabilities.

Play and record options might only be shown when a USB stick is inserted.

I have been using the display in the first post, and it is amazingly sharp and bright on the PicoMiteVGA. Good picture, good colors, viewing angle is great.

I power it from one USB port of the laptop with the included cable.
The other USB port is for the PicoMite
Third for the mouse (not a touchpad guy).

Good investment. I can write code on the kitchen table without the larger 19" screen.

Monitor sound is often rubbish anyway. I never use it on mine and the speakers are much bigger than they'd be in that monitor. It's up to you :)
