Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

For some of us, it seems, there's never enough room to work on what we love

All this more or less proves the old adage that any approximately horizontal surface will be used for piling things on.  :)

There's a thing to keep things tidy, it's called a nagging wife which I don't have so I'm a slob

I think I can complete with Mick for the most untidy workshop

At the start of this year, I cleared out my messy spare room, and converted it into a workshop with different areas dedicated to different things.

This is my main PC, hidden inside what was the clothing closet.
The keyboard is on a drawer that can slide under the desk, and then I can close the cupboard door on the whole setup to hide it away - although, it mostly just stays open!

This is a shot of my main electronic assembly area.

Another shot of same.

Service desk with various clutter.  This is quite clean to what it normally looks like!  Bug-A-Salt gun in bits for repair.

Computer repair table.  Any laptop or other PC that I take in for repair or upgrade, gets done on this table.

Various containers of switches and other electronic do-dads on the shelf on the wall, and never let a small window go to waste - I packed it with small plastic cubes of bits.  You can just see some of those, to the right of the open window.
Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Oh, go on...  Everywhere is my workspace, not having the luxury of any spare rooms to convert and having been evicted from my computer desk area in the front room when my son moved back in with us.

Living room:
This is my primary work area. Multi-purpose as I can play and watch telly (whether I want to or not) and listen to music on headphones (if I can't stand what's on telly) from the same spot.

Note the artistically balanced oscilloscope.

Just to the left of this pic there is a 3-tier basket on wheels, intended for a bathroom or kitchen. Here it does stirling service as my storage for small hand tools and odd bits.

Front room:
This is all I have left in here now, apart from my hi-fi stuff and a couple of compartmented boxes on the floor.

The "shed":
This is the only dedicated part. Unfortunately, during the "great eviction" lots of stuff was brought in here, making it virtually unusable for normal purposes. There is a small fold-down bench area somewhere under that lot. When I first did it this place was remarkably tidy. In fact, there was enough space to put up a Workmate in the middle of the floor area and walk round it.

Storage for bigger bits, such as valves, switches etc.

The mechanical area, with a mysterious load of IC sockets in a tube.

And finally, the booby-trap shelf holding my collection of Sinclair computer bits.

Hehe...

I cleared out that shed when covid started, for something to keep busy with. I mean, cleared out, too. I gutted it, painted it, rewired it and put carpet tiles down. Scrapped an old office desk that took up most of the space because I wanted to do some mechanical work indoors! I threw a heck of a lot of stuff out and re-did all the shelving. There was still some stuff to go through, that got shoved back in because of bad weather, but that was all.

Then one of my lads moved back in with us. I was pretty well set up with computers and stuff in the front room so all that had to go. Once again, a lot went as scrap but some got stuffed back into the shed. TBH I've lost heart about going through it again at the moment. Maybe when the weather picks up a bit and if I can save up enough for yet another skip (we don't drive and can't get to the tip - special rubbish collections can get expensive too).

The original pictures are just where the coding takes place. This is where the real fun happens

I really don't feel too bad about my setup after seeing all these. :)  If I can get the shed sorted out it'll make a big difference. The problem is though that it needs to be heated from autumn to spring as it's only single brick with a stone floor, so not the warmest of places. Ok for some chassis bashing but not for PCB soldering. Needs a new window frame too.

The one thing I really wish I had space for (in the shed!!) is a bandsaw. It's not going to happen though.

The Fostex drivers went into some floor-standers that I never got to work very well. They've now been converted into front slot-ported bookshelf speakers and still don't work all that well. :(  They do look reasonable though. :)

This is the most wholesome thread I've seen in years. I always assumed my desk was messy - but next to some of you guys I'm like a paragon of tidiness. I'm going to show my wife this, just to show her how much worse things could be.

Thank you all for making my day. Will take some snaps of my lair this weekend - although I feel that I cannot compete in the same league. I am truly not worthy    !

We did some work bench photos a while back,https://www.thebackshed.com/forum/ViewTopic.php?TID=10405&P=1
Not much has changed on mine, but its amazing how many projects get completed Despite the state of the workspace.

My office

I tried to do one of those panoramic shots to get everything in. As you can see, I love having art on the walls to look at.

But the picture below is the more accurate view when the door swings open (much to my wife's horror as my office opens directly in to the living room).

And a bit closer up
