I'm interested in buying a Variable drive unit to suit my new testbed .. It would have to run a single phase 240v 1.5 HP motor. If you know or a working second hand one or a reasonable priced new one ,,would you let me know,pls. I'm around the Gold Coast ,,sth east Queensland..

Hey Bruce, I am not sure if this is what you are after.
I have a variable transformer at home that I am not using. It has a large dial that changes volts up to about 260 volts.
I will have to check amps and get back to you, if you still want it.

Hi Robbo ,, that is a "vaiarc" ,I think .
Check the current cap ,,and I'll take a look at it maybe post a pic ?.

Wow, Great guess !
It climbs to 260 volts (from a 240 volt input ???)
Total is 2.5amps.

Hi guys,

the variac is not the way to go. The VFD is a better way, but is more suited to a 3phase motor.

Hi Bruce as Gordon has said a VFD is the way to go. I'm due to go back to work on the 12th and if you like I'll get a 1.5kw VFD which I'll tell em is for me so I'll buy it at cost and you can have it for the same price + postage. As your the ol' Aussie scrooge I'm sure you'll find a 3 phase 1.5Kw motor capable of running in delta at the scrapyard for not much and you'll be away.

Just let me know in IRC mate and it's really too easy
