Hi,

Slightly off topic: A suggestion in an email to take a fridge magnet along on overseas trips as your hotel key card contains all your personal information and to use the magnet to swipe the info before returning.

Does it contain your credit card info. I wonder? Or does this email just try to press the panic button of us wrinklies who like to travel?

I think its the "panic button" you are trying to press .
When I think about it - says he who has not stayed in hotels since ordinary keys got out of fashion - all they need to have on that key is the room # info & unlocking code. The office computer would match your time there & expenses to the room #, no need to program anything else onto the swipe card. They also would have to delete your data & reprogram the next guest's, far too much bother IMO.

Yup,

It is easier and cheaper to replace a key card than have some guy constantly making brass keys to replace all those lost.
Also much easier to make master keys with various levels of access for hotel staff.

Only speculation, but I suspect it would also be possible to have some kind of date code so that lost or stolen keys would not work after a certain period of time.
Cheers,  Tony.
