I use foldable solar panel via solar charge controller to charge gel cell battery then connect Laptop via DC converter to gel cell to charge the laptop (lithium ion) battery whilst laptop is turned off. Im going overseas soon and would like to travel light (without the gel cell battery). The problem is the lighter lithium polymer batteries dont seem to come in 12v and I havent found a solar charge controller for lithium. Is it possible to make some king of regulator to connect laptop straight to solar panel or is it possible to make a controller for lithium batteries? I tried connecting laptop straight to solar panel via DC converter and the voltage indicator on the converter basically flashed nonsense like crazy is the best way to describe what happened.

My laptop runs on 19V and I use JayCar inverter MP-3472, from 12V to 19V connected to 12V battery.

(This inverter has quite a few voltages (15, 16, 18, 19, 20, 22 and 24 V) up to 150W, so will definitely satisfy requirements of quite a few laptops)

Suppose if you connect solar battery with charge controller to this type inverter it will charge your laptop battery.
