Can anyone help me find out more about the 78L08 voltage regulator used on this controller. I have every thing else soldered on the board but this regulator. When I look at the datasheet for the 78L08 regulator it looks just like an ordinary transistor but in the photo of the finished controller it looks like a regulator that a heat sink can be used on? What other regulators can I use if any? This controller is on BackShed .com. Thanks for any help you can give me. Jim

There's a difference between the 78L08 and the 7808; the 7808 has a TO220 case, with a metal tab with hole for bolting to a heatsink; the 78L08 is the low-power version of the 7808, in a smaller case (TO92) such as small-signal transistors as the BC547 or 2N3904. (this information should be in the datasheet too)

For proper orientation when installing the 78L08, keep in mind that the flat side of the 78L08 is equivalent to the metal tab of the 7808; I always have to stay alert to this when using them, because I somehow have the natural inclination to install the 78Lxx reversed. And then they won't work....

Just checked ( http://www.thebackshed.com/windmill/articles/TL084-Controlle r.asp); Glenn used a 7808 when building his; that's fine, a 7808 (1A version) can replace a 78L08 (100mA version); the reverse is not the case. So you're free to choose: 7808 or 78L08. Your choice.

Is there any way to use a 7812 1amp 12VDC regulator or maybe a LM294oct on this controller located on thebackshed web site? A little secret for you Jim, just type the device number (LM294) in the google window and hit the search button. You will get a link to data sheets that tell you exactly what the device does.
Some sites want you to sign up or charge for data sheets but I found there are free ones too, just browse through the google 'hits'

Thanks Peter and Klaus. I just got my 7808 in the mail and installed it and everything worked Great. I saw a post Glen had earlier and he seemed to be having trouble setting the kick in and out on the relay (without a varitable power supply) thankfully I have one I built last winter and setting the kick in and out worked really good. I'm still not very good at understanding the data sheets (knowing what component can be substituded for another component) but I'll have all winter to work on this ha ha . I looked the schematic over and could see where the 78L08 flat face would face (what is to me) the other direction than the 7808, a good think to keep in mind. I might pick up a little of this stuff if I live to be about 100 but it is very interesting trying. Thanks again Jim

There is not to many components i cant find information on there.
And its Free.

No such thing as "old and stupid" just old and still learning.
