China’s State Grid and BYD Launch World’s Largest Battery Energy Storage Station
Monday, Jan 02, 2012

BYD and the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC) have finished construction on what may be the world’s largest battery energy storage station. This large utility-scale project, located in Zhangbei, Hebei Province, combines 140 Mega-Watts of renewable energy generation (both wind & solar), 36 Mega-Watt-Hours (MWh) of energy storage and a smart power transmission system. While there are renewable generation systems of this scale in service today, there are no battery systems of this size. The State Grid system is demonstrating a stable solution for transferring vast amounts of renewable electricity safely to the grid on an unprecedented scale. Although BYD manufactures 1GW of solar panels annually, their role in this project was primarily providing energy storage batteries in arrays larger than a football field.

“China’s Largest and First Environmentally-friendly Battery Storage Station”

SGCC chose BYD’s Iron-Phosphate battery technology because of its superior service life (over 20 years) and also used BYD’s “peak shaving & load leveling” charge and discharge methodologies. BYD’s announcement September 30th, 2011, “China’s Largest and First Environmentally-friendly Battery Storage Station,” was the first of many MegaWatt-level cooperative projects with China’s Southern Power Grid (CSG). This new project with the State Grid has outpaced other grid projects in China and, though independently designed by SGCC, is part of the national “Golden Sun” program. The first phase investment with 100MW of Wind, 40MW of Solar and 36MWh of Battery is worth over $500M USD (~3.3 Billion RMB).

“The large-scale implementation of clean and green energy, such as wind and solar power, can only be realized when the technical difficulties of this new energy application in the utility system are resolved,” said Xiu Binglin, Deputy Director of the National Energy Administration. “This State Grid project demonstrates a solution and will be the model of development for China’s new energy resources.”

BYD’s battery energy storage system provides a solution for the realization of energy storage in the smart grid that improves renewable energy efficiency by 5%-10%.

He Long, Vice President of BYD, said, “BYD is honored to cooperate with China and SGCC to build this large energy storage station and to make a contribution in the utilization of renewable energy resources.”

Hi Bob,
Interesting post. The magnitude of this project is more than impressive.Sadly they still paint childrens toys with lead content paint. They're trying to kill our kids brain cells, while they get smarter.I suppose its just not that impressive to use alternative paint!National pride and all that.Cheers Rastus

HI RASTUS

IT CERTAINLY IS A LAND OF CONTRASTS

From the old and obsolete to the best thinking on the Planet, they take and use ideas from everywhere for their own financial benifit.

The battery bank setup for stabilizing grid fluctuations due to loading and the incorporation of solar and wind energy has real potential, as time goes on this type of conservation even with old technology batteries makes good sense. the whole unit could be located under public areas such as parks and sports venues without interfering with urban space, large industries could use it to reduce their power bills and hotels and shopping malls could incorporate it to.

All the best

Bob

Hi Bob,
Another spin off could be the reduction of pollution. If china employs this tech on an industrial scale nation wide,it would lead the largest nations of the world.North America and india could sit up and take notice. My comments are not meant to offend anyone and I accept they might be seen as contraversial.Cheers Rastus

Hi Rastus

I see it as a positive lead for other nations and granted it would take huge battery banks to achieve a useful mediation of energy, but the potential is there to help load balance the system, to me it is much like damming water to regulate the flow and conserve and regulate the asset.

We will have to wait and see if it can be viable in this commercial world, where the middlemen get the lions share of the profit from electricity, along with the government taxation on the system. We do the same thing in a smaller scale with our stand alone systems and it works for us, but that is without all the parasites wanting a slice of the pie.

All the best

Bob

Hi Bob,
Electricity leaves me constantly amazed, that inteligent people made logical observations about unseen forces, then harnest them for productive purposess. If it was left up to me,we would still be rubbing two sticks together to make fire!Large commercial producers do deal on mass, which have its own set of problems.A kick back in the long run could be they price themselves out of the domestic market, increasing the attraction of personal systems. At the moment,in most cases being off grid isn't viable.Safely generating power on a personal level from the wind,is just brilliant as far as I'm concerned.Cheers Rastus

Hi Rastus

It is mind bending for us masses to think of the thought and work that went into a power system that was initiated only a short time ago in the string of time, to see how far that has progressed just in my lifetime still amazes me and the potential in the future is really mind blowing.

Two sticks and fire was once Hi Tech to.

The cost of electricity is a big issue driving innovation, not that its expensive to make today, as I was Talking to Gordon this week and he told me in SA the generating cost is 5 cents KWH the rest is profit by Government and Commercial interests.

Depending on personal application and expectations being off grid is practical and becoming more cost effective all the time depending on personal innovation. Wind is great if you are in an area with 5MS average but solar is a cost effective and reliable way to go now.

Batteries have always been the backbone of any system and can be cost effective compared to ever increasing grid prices. Generators are now being ruled out due to fuel costs but still a good backup.

A friend of mine set up his secondary battery bank in his work van and as he ran around to jobs during the day it got charged when he got home he would plug into the main bank for the night, he said it made very little difference to his fuel cost and that was tax deductible anyway as a work expense. Be creative.

All the best

Bob

Hi Bob,
China's sola wind battery storage system is in concept, what would be considered the best off grid combination, with a fuel generator stand by.In S.A. Clear skies make sola a stand out choice,I hav't seen many sola panels around the area of the farm. The south west of Vic.seems to have cloud cover most of the time, however a combined system should still be the best way to go.Battery storage at least allows some reclaim on power produced effectively reducing losses. That has to be a good thing. With consumers becoming ever addicted to "appliances" demand may eventually outstrip supply, obliging all of us to be more energy concious.Cheers Rastus
