Hi Folks
Building Mini-Hydro set and looking for some information:
With 30mm rare earth magnets in waterwheel I need a pick up coil to generate somewhere between 50 to 55 volts, does anyone out there know how many turns of copper wire I need and what gauge (10 amps)?
Regards
Gyro

G'day Gyro-Gearloose,
One thing you don't say is the what you will use as a microhyrdo input. More info will be needed on the power input to go forward on this.

Now as you say you have a few neo magnets be aware they are very temperamental to moisture so do make sure they are totally insulated.

Provide a bit more info on your input and I can help but without the type of water turbine and the water flow your question is really vague...

Regards Bryan

Yes you are right it was late last night and a couple of ports under my belt.

This is going to be a combination hydro system 1 on top of the dam I am looking at fitting Archimedes Screw into a 300mm PVC pipe connected to 48 volt permenant magnet generator/motor this one will only work when it is raining and there will be enough flow to drive it. At the end of the tube I want to put a water wheel as biggest diameter as I can fit to get maximum purchase on the water that is available which fluctuates greatly depending on the weather and time of year.

The water wheel I was looking at making it from marine ply overcoated with fibreglass resin this resin is also to cover the rare earth magnets to keep rust at bay. 32 magnets at 30mm diameter fitted in the outer circumfrance controlled by an IC to get maximum power for the water available eg: when low flow power will only be drawn from say 4 of the magnets and as water volume increases another 4 added and so on until all 32 are used (I imagine the IC will control it based on the time difference between each pulse)transversely the magnets will be withdrawn as water flow decreases.
I am looking at around 1 metre diameter for waterwheel with 32 buckets each around 2 litres in capacity so if the buckets are full I should get 16 kilos of thrust at full capacity.

Hi Gyro

You'll need to wind a test coil. A test coil is the only real way to get an idea of the potential of the alternator.

Make a test coil by winding a few turns ( remember to count them ) into the shaep of you planned coil, so in your case a circle with a inside diameter just over 30mm. The rotate the alternator at the expected speed, and measure the RPM and test coil voltage.

Sounds like a interesting project. Like Bryan says, the neo magnets dont last very long in a damp environment unless they are well protected.

Thanks Glen
My next problem is to construct a controller that measures the time difference between each pulse and deactivates the coil in divisions of for systematically from a set of 32 magnets. Is there any savvy electronics whizes out there that can help me with this.
Thanks Antonius

This is a great page / place to learn PMA's. Check out Hugh's older guides, for free:

His new guide is worth the money, but his old guide is still awesome.
