Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Vasi,

the power consumption is about right, but the specs are a bit ordinary.

I would go for an Atom board.

Mine has 1.3GHz Cpu, 2GB DDR2, SATA 320GB 7200rpm HD, 4 serial, 6 USB, GB lan, on board video, I run XP, but win 7, Vista, or linux OK as well. 500mA @ 24V, running 6 logging apps, and operating as my home server. Solid state drives, and flash ram drives are fully supported for hostile conditions, with a reduced power requirement.

There certainly are many choices of hardware. At the end of the day the apps are really the tools that do the work. I have little experience on non MS systems in recent years, so I have painted myself into a corner. It is getting harder to change as the years move on. :)

Gordon.

Hi Vasi

What is the advantage over a laptop loaded with Linux, Price is much the same.
Apart from low power requirements it needs support systems that would make it more expensive than a loptop.

All the best

Hi guys,

Is not a real PC. Is a microcontroller but powerful enough to run his own operating system. Is like a Picaxe but instead of basic, it have Linux. It have 32 input/outputs which can be used to count pulses, measure volts, stuff like that. And can record on SD card, can transmit data on usb or network. Instead of running only one specific application, can run many with different scopes.
Is interesting.

Hi Vasi,

these units are quite expensive. The 32 I/O is available only as expansion modules, as is the extra COMMs. My ATOM board was half the $, and had the 6 USB and 4 SER and LAN, I supplied the case, and power supply and HDrive.

If I was into Linux and not WIN, I may see this as a viable option.

I see many other similar units. I had an offer for a device that could be programmed remotely, so you did not even need a compiler. It was a philips product, and was net connected for programming.

There are a lot of options out there.

Gordon.

PC Pocket for logging.

If you have a Compaq iPaq, HP Journada, etc. and don't know what to do with it (or don't know why you must buy it form eBay apart form being cheap) look here.

Also, in this page you can find all the development tools for WinCE (V.Basic 3.0), including a tutorial page with the serial number for installation.

Don't know where you can find WinCE anymore (if is abandonware or not) but having the device can be enough.
