Well I'm off on holidays from this Sunday. Heading up the coast, first stop is Townsville and check out the Ropatec mindmill there. After that its up north to Cairns ( about 1000km north of my home town ) and the tablelands. I also want to visit the windfarm up near Ravenshoe, there are 20 turbines at the Windy Hill wind farm.

Should be back in Mackay by the next weekend, then one more week off before going back to work.

So I will be absent from the message board while I'm away. Hopefully it all runs ok, but if there are problems they will have to wait until I get back. I will be shutting down the windmills while I'm away, and turning off the PicLog live data stream from the Lenz windmill.

If anyone knows of any large windmills worth visiting between here and Cairns please let me know.

Hi Gizmo,
There are two Ropatec's in Townsville. The big one (6Kw) is near 'Kissing Point' on the Strand. The other is a smaller unit at the Townsville High School in Boundary Street. I do not have any info on it. It is very visable from the street and is some what alarming to watch when the wind is gusty as there is considerable wobble of the pole that it is on.

I do not have my wind generator to a point of having something to look yet (just the support structure)so I can not add much more interest to your tour.

P.S. If you would like to have a peek at a TRUMPF L4030 machine, I may be able to arrange a visit to the unit at TLC in Townsville when you are there.

Happy Holiday Glenn.
I went to "windy Peak"(think that is the Ravenshoe windfarm), quite impressive and they have painted the towers with different colors of green starting with dark green near the base.They only make a Swooshing sound as you stand under them- Anyhow, Have a safe drive

Hey Bruce, do you know how close the public viewing area is to the windmills? Can you stand up next to one? I visited a windfarm down in Victoria, the viewing platform was about 1km away from the turbines! Very dissapointed, I had driven a long way to see them.

Hi Glenn,
your welcome to stop a my place on your way. We are just north of Kuttabul, about 4km from the highway. If you can't find us from the address on the business card, give us a ring and we can give you directions. I don't have any thing up at the moment though. I guess it means you can see them up close, hey.

My dad went the that wind farm at Ravenshoe, and I could be wrong, but he said something about standing beside the generator and it was higher, like they were something like 8ft in diameter.

Thursday Island (of the cape tip) have some big ones too. We have been there, you can get very close to the bottom of the tower there. That was in 1998.

Yes Glenn, you can get right up near the towers,there is a road way down the side and the Tech's hut is down there,. Drop in and He might take you up one of them , they have a couple down for maintenance now and then.
The Tower base would be around 8 feet, the stairwell is up the centre of the steel tower.
Should be around 20 of them, if the tech can't show you around ,speak to one of the cows !.

Hey all.
Just a quick message, made it to Cairns and found a internet terminal. Checked out the Robatec windmill at Townsville on Sunday arvo, nice machine. Spent last night at Innisvale, and visited the local tourist spots. It sure is a beautifull part of Queensland up here, I can see why its so popular. So much water up here, a big contrast to my home town 1000km south.
Tomorrow I'm off to the tablelands, and Thursday will visit a war plane musiem ( there was a old Hurricane flying over today ). Friday I visit the 20 turbines at Windy hill, cant wait.

Hi Gizmo,
When you are back in Cairns, stay overnight at Acacia Court Hotel and eat at Charlie's. Or get a discount voucher out of the Cairns Post and really enjoy their seafood and chinese cuisine. Stuff yourself with prawns, oysters, crab, calamarie etc at the buffet. For amusement watch the temporary "backpacker staff" do their best to communicate with the Japanese tourists who seem to adore the place. A year ago or so I had a company credit card and I really just melted it at Charlie's. So good!!
