Hey guys, Just wondering if anyone knows of any laws prohibiting me putting up a decent sized windmill in suburban Melbourne? Ive done some reseach into it but so far have found no restrictions stopping me from doing so...  Is there any building permits needed? Its not going to be huge, probably blade diameter 1.5m... Depends on the local councils laws. They will make it as difficult for you as possible. I dont think it will be the windmill thats the worry, but the tower. I think you have to have a permit to erect any tower, and its has to be engineered to suit the load. But again it all depends on your local council. Up here in Queensland they are starting to get real fussy about what you can and cannot do. Out in the rural zone its a lot easier, but suburbia can be another matter. I have a friend who applied to put up a shed in their back yard, and they had to say what the shed was to be used for. A work shop was not allowed, but for boat/car storage was ok. Its no wonder there are so many illegal structures around. I would have a chat to your neighbours, see if they would object. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Laws are pretty tight nowadays. What do you think would happen if i did put one up and they found out. Do you think i would get charged or get a warning? I dont plan to make a huge tower nor a huge blade diameter. Another question actaully: What do you think the minimum blade diameter is for a F&P windgen? |

What I do up here in Canada is claim that it is 'electrical infrastructure' just like the hydro poles on the street. They don't need permits to erect poles. so why should you. Use a hydro pole! I am solarmike |

we up here in Canada call the electrical poles, 'Hydro poles' The things you string wires on for electrical transmission. I guess we call them that because of our original source for electricity was originaly from Hydro-electric dams. We call our electric bills up here "hydro-bills." I am solarmike |
