I found the information on Gizmo's site about rewiring the F&P stator the easiest to follow and with excellent detail in the enlargable images. But still come a cropper when I attempted my first rewire.

2nd attempt I took a different approach which made it so much easier.....so I thought I would share since I drew from his knowledge bank.  

I decided to colour code each stator to match the colour of the wire that was to be attached. (I used 20A 7 core trailer wire.) I then resized the image so I could cut it out to fit in the stator ring.

The difference it made was incredible. I knew exactly which wire to cut at a glance. In fact I just cut all the wires as indicated, torched the ends with a small portable gas torch, then sanded each one... ready for soldering. Soldered one colour wire at a time starting from the red dots....so much easier.

Then I joined wires X1,Y1 & Z1, and used X,Y & Z as my three phase STAR output. I have the option of utilising Delta when I eventually make a star/delta switch.

...Ahhh, yes it is hand coloured with texta. Last time I did that was 40yr ago, so keeping between the lines was a challenge

The image has been resized (7") to fit inside the stator ring so straight-up print should work without resizing. Cut out the full template, then cutout the centre at the black line. The black line drawn through the lower legs of the stator ring should be cutout to, to allow fitment to the original stator wire terminals.

Nice work but have questions. Would this be good for a Lenz VAWT turbine at low RPM speeds. Just wonder want the cut in speed is and the amount of power one would get. Like to try one but live in Canada and where to source one out. Also is there much clogging.

Hi Wayne,

I'm in the same boat as you, a newbie. This was my first attempt at rewiring. DeCogging....it's something that needs to be done to the stator...I'm yet to do it. It greatly reduced the energy force needed to start the gennie turning.

All useful info I've sourced so far comes from EcoInnovation Info Files or from DIY Windmills, especially the rewiring method. Sourcing a motor should be easy, You can buy a base kit from EcoInnovation or the dump or scrap metal yards..the latter obviously the cheaper options.

Which F&P model to look for?...can't tell you. EcoInnovation seem to be the only ones that know, and to get that info you have to buy their "Smart Drive Reconnection & Performance Manual". Don't be to concerned, most F&P's have the 80 series although the 60 series is common.

Don't let the S, SP and P confuse you. This actually refers to the way the motors are rewired ..it's not a F&P model thing. Most seem to prefer the 80 series rewired STAR/DELTA (SP).

VAWT ??  this is the way I'm going with my project. The VAWT concept is mostly ignored, but as Ed has proven, it has great potential. I'm working on the principle that because of it's design, it will start in a lighter breeze. It also develops more torque, so gearing option may be available to increase RPM at the Gennie.

Guys , don't be too confused , just get your hands on the F&P washing machines ,then remove the stators,rotors,bearings Etc.

In Oz, you will most likely get the .8mm stator,followed by the .6 mm and if you are lucky and get an old model ,it may have the 1mm wire in it ---- nearly everything else in all the machines are similar. just start your scavenging at local tips ; washing machine mechanics;big whit goods retailers--remember ,mrs smith wants her old washing machine removed-so the retailer brings it back and usually dumps it in the loading bay --go have a look.

The de-cogging is quite easy with a 100mm disc sanding tool with coarse disc or a medium metal grinding disc-go gentle ,don't take too much off, just slightly round the crown of the finger-be careful of touching the coils --do a few -have a rest ,sort of advice.

don't forget to varnish the job when finished.

I scored a 100 series last week....

BTW, ozetrade & turbine are one. I forgot I first registered as turbine...prefer ozetrade. Hope ADMIN can sort that out for me.

I'm logged in here at work...turbine login must have been cached on this PC...didn't even notice.

I dropped my magnetic hub to my F&P the other week, not happy... Its warped and cracked now. Gotta go find another

Hi Greg

Thanks so much for the help and didn't know there was alot of info on smart drive generator. I was reading over Eco- Innovation files and they quote Smart 400 uses a new generation type 4 cog free version, so declogging is not required.  Or is this just filing down each finger of each  stator?. But going to try to find one to test or order one. Then try it on one Lenz VAWT. Seems where I live my VAWTs are always spinning but my 3 blade prop just waits for that storm. Really like to produce some power from these.

What they are actually saying is....it's cog free because we have decogged it. They found out that Fisher & Paykel had been doing decogging testing on thier motors. Eco have taken that knowledge and applied to their new 400 series.
