Hi All,

I have received my Headphone sockets form ebay, and have successfully added the part into DEX. Well, almost finished.

The part is a Surface Mount, with two small studs, that need to go into holes underneath the socket, for the PCB Guides.

How do I add these 0.8 mm Diameter holes(2), to the part?

Will keep trying myself, but thought I would ask here.

Keep plugging away, it is fun learning
But can be expensive (if you keep blowing things up).

I have managed to add PCB holes to my parts but they don't show up on the PCB view.
They are there because the design checker complains if I get my traces too close to them.

I forget the steps to add the holes and since the last W10 update, I am unable to use the part builder so I can't go back and check.

It makes life difficult!

Instead of PCB holes, can you add through hole pads to a surface mount part?

This is a part I created with two mounting holes.
The holes are there in the footprint in the library viewer but do not show on the PCB.

Hi All,

If you select PCB filled the holes will show.

Also you can always check the 3D view

@ TassyJim and Bigmik

Thanks for the tips. I just added them as holes, and ignored the warning about being smaller than 2.54mm. I'll just make a note of telling the PCB maker about it, or do you suggest plated through holes (TPH?) would be stronger, and a better solution?

Hi Wombat,

Re THP holes.

I don't think they will be any stronger to get them plated as 0.8mm plastic spikes would be pretty weak... many times weaker than the PCB Substrate.

I think if the dia. is critical you are best of using holes as depending on what the PCB manufacturer's process is they might decrease the hole dia. or over drill to get the right dia. But with holes they should drill the size you ask.

Kind Regards,

Mick

How come these holes need PCB turned on but the mounting holes in my board show up without PCB being on?

At least the layers panel is one that I can use without crashing.

It is b... difficult trying to learn the program when the properties panel and part builder are out of bounds.

Hi Jim,

I don't know.. Possibly a bug..

Best to create a bug report in the bug reporter as it certainly looks like a minor bug.

Kind Regards,

Hi Jim,
I was having trouble with crashes until version 8.41 (25th July) there was a parts builder fix in that update, its fine now (for me anyway).
I'm confused, no wait... maybe I'm not...

I didn't have issues until the Windows10 Anniversary Update.
I partially resolved the problem by changing my video card drivers.
That worked for a week or so until another Windows 10 update.

I don't know if it was Windows or DEX that changed.

Since then, nothing I have tried has fixed the problem.

I have submitted a bug report and given Iliya the details. He can't reproduce the error so all I can do is hope that a future update to Windows or DEX will fix it.

I have taken a look at Eagle but I would rather have DEX working again.

GDay Jim,

Have you tried uninstalling DEX completely including deleting all files in the directory:

C:\USERS\"JIM"\AppData\Roaming\AutoTRAX Software

and

C:\Program files\AutoTRAX Software

Make sure you backup your libraries first.

Then reinstall

Kind Regards,

Mick

That was step number one.
Provided I don't try and click on one of the double chevrons to expand a panel, all is well.

I have put DEX on the PC attached to my CNC and if needed use it there.
The shed is too cold for sitting in and the network is over WIFI so remote access is a pain.

I have managed to create a 'backpack' for the explore64 and a 7in display without an accidental crash..

I understand if Iliya isn't too concerned for one user and it's difficult to fault find when you can't reproduce the error yourself so I have to be patient. It's just bad timing now that I have the CNC and are raring to go making boards.

Jim,

Have you tried to run DEX as administrator?

Does `run in Compatibility Mode' still exist? I just checked and it appears microsoft may have killed that off.

Been there, done all that.
Compatibility mode is still there but no use this time.

Thanks All,

I managed to put holes for the pcb guide, in ok.

Quickly whipped up an stl model to add for the package. Scale was a bit off.
Had to import the stl at 0.0155 scale. Created the model using real world dimensions. Got it to fit eventually.

For Comparison. The Real One.

Thanks again for all of your help.

Jim,
I have found part builder very slow, not responding. I have latest windows 10 and DEX.
I have just removed the catalog 1 directory from the library and on first impressions seems to have made it work like before.

catalog 1 is really big, I think is might be scanning the library when it does not need to. Do you have it installed? if so might be worth giving it a go with it removed.

I reported that 'solution' on the DEX forum a while ago.
I think the problem appeared when Iliya added the code to undelete parts.

It is one of a number of problems that are affecting me at the moment but I am sure that fixes will appear in time.
