First time I plugged pico usb version and usb to ttl converter into win 11 laptop and no com port but showed in device manager. said driver not installed.
had to go to silicon labs and download cp21x universal windows driver.
now shows as silicon labs cp210x usb to uart bridge com 3 and pico detected.
never had this with win 10. maybe it's win 11 from iso

As every installation of W11 appears to be a little different I don't know if this will work:-

Right click on the installation .exe file and examine the pop-up list.
If "Run as Administrator" is there click that and see if that gives you an option to override the security warning.

More information needed.
A screenshot of whatever appears when you try to install would be nice.

There are some deliberately nobbled W11 which restricts you to apps in the MS store. If that's the case, You can upgrade W11 to a real version or live without MMEdit.

What happens when you click on:-

Change my app recommendation settings >

My guess is that will give you the option to install other apps.

I abandoned Windows years ago, so sorry I can't comment about FTDI there.  Linux supported FTDI & so many others without any hassle.

I've not used Win 11 with a usb-ttl converter personally, but I'm surprised that it isn't recognised automatically. I don't think I have a converter using the CP21xx family, but I'll have a look round.

That version of Win 11 may be the problem.

I abandoned linux years ago.. a site offered ubunto cd from holland and sent it free. win 90/xp can't remember, dual boot.
then raspberry pi, linux again. it's a complicated command line system with a pretty gui. don't have to use command prompt in win. sorry, way it is.

The things you typically post about look to be suitable for the GUI so you wouldn't need to use the command line.  The GUI stuff has grown a lot every year and can do a lot nowadays (for those who like that).

Do bear in mind most RPi systems are rather resource poor for full GUI use.  Imagine trying to run modern Windows on a Pentium II or such... (if it were possible).

OTOH if Windows is what you like and does what you want on hardware you can afford, you may as well stick with it.
