All,

As of this morning YouTube advertisements started taking minutes (not 10 or 20 seconds, sometimes up to few minutes). And they cannot be interrupted.

Please don't post on youtube anymore. If your situation is the same, no-one will view your video's anymore (at least I won't wait 5 minutes, for a few seconds video to start). It is a waste of time. And I am definitely not going to pay YouTube to remove the adverts. My only support is to Wikipedia and thebackshed.

Stated not too long ago: Use the Duckduckgo browser. No ads and they have their own viewer "Duck Player" for YouTube that bypasses the ads. One can choose regular YT or Duck Player.

I honestly find You Tube Premium to be one of the more worthwhile subscriptions I have. I watch lots of videos on it (lots of Retro stuff)- and it's good to be able to hop between them without wasting time on ads. Of course, that's just my specific scenario - everyone has different requirements.

Hi Volhoult, All,

I too, hate the YT ads. On my PC using chrome the ads are generally no longer than 15s but sometimes 2 of them, but mostly 5s or less, using the app on my LG TV I found some that were 1 minute long, what I did there was exit the playback and try again and it would revert to either 5s 15s 20s or 30s so I would continually exit and replay.

This was a right PiTa so I bit the bullet and paid the $8.99 AU per month for the premium lite which is actually IMHO a very nice experience.

The only ads now are music clips and embedded ads that can be fast forwarded.

I don’t like paying the fee but it has improved my YT experience so much.

Regards,

Mick.

@Volhout:

If I want to watch the videos undisturbed, I use the live DVD version of KNOPIX with VENTOY (WITHOUT a physical DVD drive). The implemented Chrome browser prevents advertisements from popping up.

Otherwise I download the videos first with https://www.freemake.com/de/free_video_downloader/ and watch them offline...

Freemake, is not free (as implied by the name).  In fact they charge quite a lot BUT if you refuse to pay they keep throwing better and better offers at you.  So, don't take the first price.

I have found "Brave" browser works for me as ad-free usage, I think someone else mentioned this recently.

I don't pay anything for it! If you move the mouse pointer upwards over the window on the https://www.freemake.com/de/free_video_downloader/ page (possibly several times), an input window will appear in which you can enter the Youtube link. Then you can simply download most of the videos...

Good grief, you are right Frank.  I just tried it and it worked!
They are a sneaky lot... that was not obvious (to me, anyway).

It won't run Win 11 for a very good reason. I won't even consider installing it. :)
TBH it would probably be a very unpleasant experience anyway. Low powered fanless CPU, 4GB RAM and only 64GB on Drive C: (relatively slow flash, not spinning rust). I have another 256GB flash on drive D: Even most cheap laptops are higher powered now.

I have another machine for Win 11 but that is higher powered, has a fan and has more RAM and storage. That has no ads either (well, it didn't last time I tried it) - Brave browser again. I've pinched it's power supply for this one at the moment 'cos this one died.

I installed win 11 on unsupported hardware. it's configurable if you activate it but little things like right click to copy and not in options, must select more options at bottom of list to show copy paste.boring.

I don't actually care whether this machine is supported or not. Win 11 isn't going to go on it. I'm not going to go through the hassle just to find out that 4MB RAM and 64MD drive C: and a 8-yr old Celeron N3450 1.1MHz is sluggish. :)  I don't need to. I have a Win 11 machine right next to it.

I have a third baby fanless that might get Mint on it yet if I can figure out how. I did try to install it when I first got it but the installer wasn't playing. That's why that one is still on the Win 10 that it came with.

I've used Win 11 and I don't consider it enough of an upgrade to make it worth wrecking a fully working Win 10 setup. Now, if they'd taken crud *out* of it and increased the reliability then that would have been a worthwhile upgrade.

I use Jdownloader to download YouTube videos
https://jdownloader.org/

It is a good generic downloader for all kind of things

Just copy the URL to the clipboard
Jdownloader scans the location and offers to download it
