I watched this episode a couple of days ago and thought that this will be the answer for my aging w10 machines but then I had a little bit of a reminder of years ago a similar scenario was at hand and it only lasted a couple of months before a Microsoft update closed the door and made the hardware incompatible again. I am not sure that I would fully commit until the dust settles. 0A47 |

I hear that, OA47, but could you not disable the W11 auto update...."Feature"? It is certainly true that ANY of these cut-down version of Windoze, are really only for people who are prepared to be their own I.T. department when something goes wrong!  Smoke makes things work. That would be OK if the OS was kept away from the internet but MS always describes these things as critical updates that you have to have or the world will stop turning.  0A47 |

Personally I won't take risks with an OS. I'd like my system(s) so keep running, thanks. :) I have used stuff like tiny versions of Windows in the past without problems, but times move on and every bit of protection you can get from nasties on the internet is needed. That means all security updates. Unfortunately we don't just have simple viruses to contend with now. Even day one types are vastly cleverer than we used to get. You pays your money and you takes your choice. I'd even rate a tiny Linux distro like Puppy as being far more secure than a tiny Windows one. Installed win11 on aged lenovo z710 :) Downloaded WIN11 ISO from micro$oft Generated and added autounattend.xml to original installation iso using UltraIso Modified WIN10 registry as Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\Setup\LabConfig] "BypassTPMCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassSecureBootCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassRAMCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassStorageCheck"=dword:00000001 "BypassCPUCheck"=dword:00000001 Maunted installation ISO from win10 Installed ... at least it boots up, updates etc. Intalled without copilot, cortana etc. Looks like win11 :) |

Maybe I'm not understanding things. But is this only for fresh installs? Or can it be used to upgrade from Windows-10 to Windows-11 leaving all the applications and data ready to use? |

I believe it is for fresh/new installs only. Most of the tiny Windoze versions are built like that, IE: not as an upgrade path, but as a completely new install. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

With all kind of "security" and "improvement" updates, Sir :) Even if that is possible, I wouldn`t try that. WIN11 would mess with activation, I think, and you would be in trouble. What I wanted to tray was - could I have installed WIN11 on old machine and would it be usable at all. Even if it seems to work freshly installed, it would keep it offline ;) |

I just tonight, installed the W11 on a spare mini-PC, a BMAX B1-Pro(2-core 1.1GHz, 6GB RAM, 512GB SATA) It all went painlessly, and W11 runs fine on this mini-PC, albeit a LITTLE slow, as the hardware spec is really a bit low for W11. Improvements I made were to "Adjust for best performance" in the visuals, and to disable the automatic reboot on BSOD. That makes this W11 a bit more responsive, as you would expect. Surprised that these were not options in the auto-install script generator thing. Perhaps they simply forgot - there are A-LOT of settings you can change. The auto-installer correctly created a local account for me, along with my specified password - no need to sign in with a bloody MS account, something that I absouletly HATE about W11 by default. I guess that with any PC or laptop, you COULD go into the BIOS and temporarily disable the WiFi adaptor, to FORCE W11 to create a local account, but if you DON'T do that, and W11 is able to find either an ethernet or WiFi connection, it will FORCE you to sign-in with a MS account, and I hate that so much, I can't tell you....    I can see this cut-down W11 concept, working very well for a system that you NEVER connect to the internet. Thus, you never have to worry about some nastie getting into the cut-down system. I build low-power FM radio stations for people now, and this version of W11 would seem to suit that kind of application well. Just disable WiFi or unplug the ethernet, so there is pretty much zero risk of any nastie getting in there, but it allows you to run the latest radio-station automation software etc. That is but ONE use case I can think of, but there probably are others.
