Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

My daughter has an Ipod and wants me to transfer the music to my computer then to her phone. Anyone know of a free way to do this without ITunes.

Hi there

Mac or Windows?

iTunes is free on Windows as I recall.

On the Mac it should appear in Finder.

What sort of phone are you trying to move the songs to?

Not sure how the DRM will work though?

Apple has been making iPods from 2001 thru 2022, and there were 3 different ways to connect them to a computer: FireWire, USB and Lightning according to the iPod Wiki. If you have a FireWire iPod, then you’ll need to have an older Mac with FireWire ports. If you have a newer iPod with USB or Lightning, then you should be able to connect it to a recent Mac or Windows machine with USB ports.

Software - try Senuti https://www.aiseesoft.com/resource/senuti-for-windows.html

That is not the problem. I can download the music to Windows but the only way you can play the music is with Apple software. You can't use Media Player for example. I want to put the music on an Android phone. I have since found an app for Windows that downloads the music files in a playable format. Had to pay for it though.

I suspect the music was encoded with the AAC codec. FYI there are preferences in iTunes to store and export songs in AAC or MP3 format. I’ve been using MP3 since iTunes was released in 2001 and never had any problems playing songs in cars off thumb drives and a number of Android tablets.

She wants to play the music using an Android phone, it's all fixed now. As long as she is happy. But I will keep VLC media player in mind for the future.

Yes, I have an audio converter but didn't realise the files were just a different format. Apple being what it is I thought there must be some encryption or something stopping me from playing them. I should have tried.
