This is directed MAINLY at the NZ members here, as they will be familiar with our fiber network, but I welcome any reply. In NZ, for a fiber connection, we have the fiber connected to an ONT(Optical Network Terminal), and a network cable comes out of the GE1 port of the ONT. 99.9% of all setups, then have this network cable connected to a ROUTER. I came across a setup today, that would not work for the people, and it was an AP connected directly to the ONT, but there is NO ROUTER in the network side of things. They can connect fine to the AP, but there is no internet service available. I can believe that. Should there not be a router in series between the ONT and the AP? IE: An AP cannot act as a router, and so will not provide an internet connection WITHOUT a router, yes? ONT - Optical Network TERMINAL, which to me, is therefore NOT a router in and of itself, it is just a network protocol connection to the WAN, yes? Smoke makes things work. I have something similar - ONT with a router. Looks like the router <-> ONT uses PPP. They may be trying to use DHCP to the ONT, which mine (for example) will not do. John |

Yes, I think so too.  I can confirm, that MOST fiber connection here in NZ, are indeed PPP protocol, so I think we simply need to put a router in front of the AP, as PPP and DHCP are different beasts, protocol wise. Thoughts? Opinions? Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

The router has a DHCP server that provides IP addresses for each client that provides a MAC address. Unless your ONT has a build in DHCP server, there is no way you can connect to it, also not through an access point. Bluntly, and accesspoint is a wireless version of an UTP cable.
