Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Has anyone had any experience with Microsoft Word Voice to Text, or any voice to text app for that matter. I don't want to buy something and find out it is crap.

I know that if you are bored in a Teams meeting then you should turn on auto-captioning as the results are frequently hilarious.

Best wishes,

As with many things like this there is a huge "it depends" inviolved.

It takes a lot of practice to be able to dictate to such things. I've tried several systems but since I moved to Linux many years ago I've not really bothered that much as there as not any sox available back then.

I do use the google voice to text system in google docs and that is very useful to get something down, but it always needs a lot of editing after.

I would suggest that you try that first, as it will prob, be better than most stand alone software. It will give you a better idea of what it can do.

A long time ago I used and sold Dragon-dictate.
You had to put a lot of time in training it to your voice. Once trained it wasn't too bad but I think typing is quicker. Or it was when I could type better than I can now.
Now I can't talk well enough either...

I had a client who was keen on using dragon-dictate but his strong Eastern European accent was too much for it. He ended up marrying his secretary instead.

Another important point is the use of a good microphone. I have had good experiences with the microphone (with amplifier circuit) that was included in a old Dragon naturallyspeaking package. I am always amazed at the performance of Google on the smartphone.

I use Word's Dictate feature all the time and it is fabulous.  A little while ago someone gave me a couple of pages of handwritten text and I just read it out loud and the Dictate function got it almost perfectly, including most of the punctuation.

Even in ordinary composition I use it to enter just a few words, it is a one button click and much quicker (and accurate) than typing.

I'm not sure if the Dictate feature of Word is the same as what you called "Microsoft Word Voice to Text" but it comes free with the later versions of Word (I use Word 365).

Yes that's the one Geoff. My daugter is studying and this term has 10 essays of 15,000 words and she is a two finger typist. At $109/year I might give it a try.

Quote  Voice access is a feature in Windows 11 that enables everyone to control their PC and author text using only their voice and without an internet connection. For example, you can open and switch between apps, browse the web, and read and author email using your voice. For more information, go to Use voice access to control your PC & author text with your voice.

Voice access is available in Windows 11, version 22H2 and later. For more information on Windows 11 22H2 new features, and how to get the update, see What's new in recent Windows updates. Not sure which version of Windows you have? See: Find Windows version.

You may not need MS Office

Jim

I will have to give it a try and see if Windows is capable of understanding me...
