Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

G'Day Guy's,
For the last few weeks been trying to get a SSF desktop at auction only to find I get trumped at the end. Well this week I didn't and for $126 got a i7 7th gen with 16 gig of data.

Well first it was in to JB-hi to get a wireless keyboard and mouse combo, the cheapest I found was a $70 gaming one so went to the counter and asked all I want is a basic keyboard where she pointed to shelf behind me where a logitech combo box was, $54 was the price as she did mark it down heaps.

So back home to connect up my 24" monitor as it did have a display port jack only to find the LCD was dead. None of the onscreen buttons worked so back in to JB to look for a monitor. Well had a choice at the cheapest ones and for $199 got a 27" curved LCD so back home to try it out to find the new cable supplied didn't fit so once again back into JB to grab a cable. The guy helping me found one and said give me a minute to see if I can get the price down and got it for half the listed price. So back home and finally got the computer to life. Found the computer didn't have wifi so just plugged the Ethernet cable from the Sky link router and connection problems solved.

So once I get all the data from the linux box transferred over I'll have 3/4's of my desk back as this new setup is at the back corner of the bench with the monitor sitting ontop of the computer box.

Regards Bryan

Now, it it was "back to CP/M 2.2" that would be interesting. ;)

Sounds like you had some "fun" getting that set up, Bryan. lol

Well many years ago a HD failed in my desktop and by putting in a new HD windows refused to load so I went to linux. A couple of years later my laptop saw the same fate with the HD failing so put in a new HD and got the same thing windows refused to load.

I scored a decent laptop at auction with win10 on it so with that learned the ropes again and decided well why not not try to build a another cheap PC and this came out a tad under $400 all up.

The last time I used window was win7 and I'm still getting my head around this win10 and as all the CNC software does seem to windows based it did make sense to go back to it.

Playing with my CMM2 with the new laptop connected MMEdit just worked and as I was typing code it was displayed the command centre in real time. So for me that was the game changer and once I can get my head around all the new software I'll get another win setup for the shed.

So the fun continues as I relearn all this microsucks stuff.

Regards Bryan

Bryan1,

You could have contacted MS when you swapped HD, and they would have given you a new key. This was a well known problem. I made exactly the same moves back then. Going linux. But a MS emplyee told me I could have asked for a new key.

I just got an AE optiplex intel quad core I5 4570, 8GB with win 11 pro for £73.50 vat&p&p. win 11 new to me and no hdmi but vga is 1920x1040. there lay a problem, no audio from rear or front 3.5 jacks. I could hear sound though!... there's an in built "business" speaker. Anyway plugged a usb to audio dongle and now got stereo to tv.

A new key from MS wouldn't of worked as when loading in win7 it failed on the board level saying the hardware can't run this OS. Now both the desktop and laptop were acer brand.

I've seen "no bloat" win 10 before. My other 3 win 10 pcs have wrong processors ie no security layer and another feature that can be turned on I read for Dell pcs.
What spec pc does win 11 superlite need to install?

Well finally pulled out my laptop here at work as it is quiet, noticed today got close to 50 gig of data to use in 3 days on my mobile so decided to do a windows update on the laptop and just over a gig downloaded.

Now with this desktop I'm really surprised on the startup time as it goes straight from the boot screen to the OS in like 30 seconds.

The newer versions of Windows by default don't fully shutdown.

If interested, read about such as fastboot and hibernate.

A newish BIOS has settings you might want to look at, too.
