Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Oh no. I missed the original post. I hope he is all right since I've not seen him post since . Presumably because the site was dynamically served from a database it doesn't appear to have been archived by https://archive.org/web/. If anyone is still in contact with The Captain or does have a copy I can *try* to convert the content to a GitHub hosted wiki to which we can assign multiple owners. Oh dear, I never visitted "site news". Complete surprise. Sorry, my capabilities are not in hosting or servers. Best wishes for the Captain. Volhout PicomiteVGA PETSCII ROBOTS |

If I had known that, I would have saved the page with HTTRACK a long time ago! Frank |

I too missed the original post. I hope the Capn is doing OK. Assuming we can get access to the files for the site what costs are we looking at to shift the site to a new server and take control of the Domain? Can we raise the funds to take FotS over and run it ourselves? I am happy to contribute some $ but I know nothing about setting up and running websites. Regards, Mick . That I sadly suspect may be the big IF, plus if I understand correctly they may be in a form that we won't be able to trivially transfer as I believe FOTS was running on a quite archaic Microsoft IIS instance. Every GitHub repository gets a free wiki instance attached to it (and I don't believe you have to be a git guru to use it) so I would propose transferring the content to GitHub where: - we wouldn't be paying anything, though M$ would be using the content to train its AI - it's simple to fork/clone copies making it more resilient - we can have multiple owners and thus a higher truck number I would be happy to undertake this work (though probably not quickly), or at least *try* if we can get the content. I contacted @CaptainBoing (Andrew) via PM on here in November and he gave me a copy of the files. I am not sure where he is in his journey now, but indicated he was a "goner heathwise". I didn't press him for the details but he did say "I am very pragmatic about it... it's not a tragedy, just early." I have gone someway with a script to convert the files to another wiki (DocuWiki) so it could be hosted on a linux server. The FOS was on ASP so would have needed a windows server. Gerry Footnote added 2024-01-10 21:20 by disco4now Re Tom's post. I did look at the wiki on GitHub but to me looked a bit limited. I have not played with wiki so may have under estimated it. DocuWiki was available on my NAS server and is also available as an application on CPanel hosted services so I have been heading towards that. I am happy to assist with what ever solution we could come up with. Gerry Latest F4 Latest H7 |

Thank goodness. Oh dear . Do we need that much functionality ? Using GitHub and having multiple owners should largely prevent this issue from repeating itself. That said, if we don't use GitHub then it is "somebody else's problem" and I can wash my hands of it . Best wishes, Tom Game*Mite, CMM2 Welcome Tape, Creaky old text adventures |

I have just had another look at the GitHub wiki and on a second look after playing with DocuWiki it does seem to have more than I first thought. Can you explain how the multiple owner thing works? Does it mean you could have several trusted contributors working on it and still being free? Gerry Latest F4 Latest H7 |

D'oh - I too normally don't look at Site News :( (Also I didn't ever think to clone FotS.) If needed I'm happy to contribute some reasonable amount of cash. John |

I actually meant multiple "collaborators". The wiki would be associated with a public GitHub repository which someone would have to "own", but the other collaborators would have admin rights on that repository. At least one (preferably more) of the collaborators should make a fork of the repository and occasionally synchronize it to serve as a backup should the original repository become unavailable. Provided we check the correct setting any registered GitHub user would be able to edit the Wiki, not just the "collaborators". Any registered GitHub user would be able to edit it, whether they can be trusted is anyone's guess . And yes if it is a public repository then it should be free. Don't panic, the digital hoarder I am, I have a copy of it made with HTTRACK. So if you need a copy I figure out if I could upload it to dropbox or so... I just looked at it.. its about 360MB - zipped to 208 MB Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/m8gvpsbhesi8bo6s9bhxn/fruitOfTheShed.rar?rlkey=9mqd20rz52ehtj8ki5xev7yry&dl=0 Greetings Daniel Edited 2024-01-10 23:42 by Amnesie |

Very sorry to hear about the Cap't. His contributions were many through FoTS--always apt and often ingenious. Hope he is doing better than he had feared. Very limited github user here, but I also would be willing to contribute to the effort of porting and maintaining FoTS there. Would it be too grandiose to hope that some github-based wiki/file system could combine FruitOfTheShed contributions with those from CMM2.fun and Pete Cotton's idea of a WAN file downloader perhaps with a front-end derived from Jiri's NC-Commander (also github-sourced)? ~ Edited 2024-01-11 01:58 by lizby PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed |

Hello everyone I can help if necessary hosting the server in a AWS or equivalent hosting service. I have experience with hosting and also with web, front and backend development. Maybe I can also help migration the code to another language, like PHP. In the early 2000's I worked with ASP and IIS as well. |

Terribly sad news and a real shock! I too regularly looked up FOTS and often thought how much effort Andrew was putting in on our behalf - it is a very valuable resource and his efforts are appreciated by many of us. If it is possible can someone please let Andrew know that we are thinking of him and, subject to his wishes, keep us posted on how he is faring. Of course, if there is any thing we can do, if only a supportive message, we would all gladly help. With respect to FOTS, as several have said, don't let money hold back its future - I too will contribute if required. All the best, Andrew Garrett |
