It's a long time since I upgraded an O/S & I don't recall how I did it.
I upgraded W98 to XP & later XP to W7. But I did not keep any notes on how I did it.
So if someone can give me a few pointers please to get me started.  Any assistance will be appreciated.

Hi Larny,

Some versions of windows cannot be upgraded as such (ie keep all files and settings) and those that can will only upgrade to the same type (ie. home-home or pro to pro)

Anyway a quick google search found >>> This <<<, I havent read it through but it is as good a place to start as any.

Regards,

Mick

Edit ** that was an upgrade to W10 but at worst you should be able to upgrade 10 to 11.

Win 11 requires Trusted Platform Module (TPM) version 2.0 to be pressent.

This is a harware secruity device.  Couputers older that 2016 may not include this.  Depending on the mother board in you PC, there may be a socket marked TPM if so you will need to perchase a TPM2 module.

You can run a program from Microsoft to check if your pc can support win 11 and walk you through how to determin if TPM is available.

there are workarounds to force win11 to load and run without a TPM present. it is not an essential piece of hardware, just something that microsoft wishes to force upon users.

larny: why are you upgrading from win7? have you considered staying with 7, or having it run in a VM under Linux? with windows safely contained in a VM you don't need pesky things like anti-virus, and as a result it runs quite well

cheers,

TPM - another way of MS trying to turn the thumb-screws on everyone's PC, so that only systems they approve of, can run the bloody OS.

I've had one encounter with TPM, and it was a horrible one.
It's not enough that MS want all software to be approved by them, now they want all the motherboards to be approved by them.
All in the name of keeping you safe, so they say, but many tyrannical things are put in place in the name of keeping the people safe, when it really is more about maintaining control over you then protecting you per-se'....

I must stop myself now, or I will go off on another rant!

Linux is a very viable option now, with Mint becoming better and better all the time as far as a Windoze user migrating to it are concerned.  I still run this one W10 machine, but only cos my CAD software is Windoze only, and they won't run inside WINE reliably.  They DO run very happily inside a VM under Linux, but if you have to build a Windoze VM inside Linux just to run specific software, you are better off just running Windoze natively for those softwares - MHOO.

Back on topic, GENERALLY SPEAKING, a machine that runs Win7 happily, won't run W11 happily at all.  Assuming you can get it installed and running with or without TPM, it will run like a snail on hardware designed for Win7.  Each new version of Windoze just so happens to conveniently require a whole new computer to run it.  It's called peddling the market, and MS and MB manufacturers have been doing it for years.  One of the reasons I like Linux so much now - you can run even recent versions of Mint, on REALATIVELY old hardware, and it will run fine.  Better then W11 will on the same older hardware, for example.

I'm ranting again, aren't I? (rhetorical!)

fwiw I've done several updates from win7 to win10 on both hardware and vm's.
Plenty of examples on the web on the process.
Min ram for win10 is at least 4gb, it'll run on 2gb but it'll be like a dead snail. I'd aim for 8gb and replace any hdd with an ssd, they are pretty cheap these days.
I did read several articles a week or so ago saying that microsoft have finally put a stop to using a win7 license key to activate an update to win10. I haven't confirmed this nor tried it, do your own research.
All that aside apart from the couple of hours involved for updates and upgrades, it was a pretty straight forward process. If you do the hdd to ssd conversion prior to the win7 - win10 update then you will have a fallback in case it goes pear shaped.

Also win11 will install and run under proxmox as it (proxmox) can virtualise the TPM module in software. ie you don't need the underlying hardware to support a tpm module.

my win 10 pcs are not good enough. I'm happy with win 10 anyway.

linux is for experts. I got twisteros on rpi 400 and set to "win 10" but does "win 11 and 7" sort of. just eye candy, not win at all.

Not really, depends on what you do with it.
Need to be an Expert for this latest windows stuff,
If you only need an internet computer Linux is very easy, it just works, windows has been a pain with internet, without an internet connection it has been trouble free for years, happy with that, but will never upgrade.
How much time in our lives has been wasted on mindless reinstall's and blue screens and power wasted waiting for it?
We still need our programs to run on something so sort of stuck with it

Not an issue for me....it felt like the original windows was the malware.

All I use a PC for is developing code and the source is automatically sync'd to Onedrive, Googledrive, Dropbox and FTP'd to my phone.

Speed is increased, memory usage is decreased, no nagging and never had to reboot.

Loving it
