That Kid needs some penitentiary Therapy in Huntsville Texas or Angola, Jailbreaking an iPhone is Moral and Righteous, but Stealing personal Data with the intent to commit a real crime should win you time with people that have nothing to lose, and will meed out justice!

He hacked the iPhone so that he wasn't tied to AT&T and made the Playstation run linux, with a warning that he doesn't condone using his hack to run pirated games. I don't remember him stealing personal data - that was Anonymous, wasn't it? He did get round Sony's attempt to make their device totally secure against hackers, for that he deserves applause.

Being a bit of a tearaway at heart I don't blame him in the least for what he did.    I've never agreed with the practice of tying a phone to a single network - that would be illegal in Europe and the UK. His Playstation hack was also fine in my book as he was merely making it do something that it wasn't intended to do. It was his Playstation, not Sony's. They'd lost ownership of it at point of sale. I also disagree with the court's findings. Sony shouldn't have been allowed to bring in a figure based on *potential* lost sales, they should have had to provide a reasonable estimate of how many sales had already been lost due solely to his actions. The door was left wide open to them to use any figure that came to mind, even if games were so terrible that no-one would have paid for them anyway.

If he got fined it should have been on the same scale that big businesses get fined, after all he made his findings available to the few people capable of understanding them in the world. The fine should have been about $20 - for being such a cocky little prat.

I see this as Sony's attempt to maintain control over hardware that has already been sold. Bosch can't sue me either if I use a cordless screwdriver as a hand mixer, even if I publish the instructions for it.

I don't care what they do, Sony products have been completely off my shopping list since they added copy protection with rootkit capabilities to their music CDs.

Yes, it was Anonymous that stole the user data, the young hacker kid did not.  That is stated in the video.  It is illegal here in NZ too, to have a phone tied permanently to any one network.  You can get certain phones that are preset for a certain network, but you can pay a fee to have them "Unlocked", then they will work with any SIM.
I believe that is the best way to do phones.  The idea that phones are tied to a certain network and you can never choose another network, seems a bit anti-competitive to me!

WOW it Hurts my Brain so much to hear Socialist Talk like I don't own what's mine! I Absolutely believe in the right to repair and the right modify, but I do not Believe any one has the right or Ability to force me to not lock a Product I Manufacture to the Service Provider of my Choice. the reason iPhones were locked to AT&T in the beginning was because of subsidized sales, as soon as the Communists in our Government forced apple to make the iPhone available to other networks, the Price jumped to cover the losses of revenue. seriously Government interference in Business is ALWAYS A BAD THING! so my $400 iPhone cost me $1100 last time I upgraded because the Free Enterprise economy that made America Great "seems a bit anti-competitive"

I would argue that if a phone has to be locked to a particular network for life in order to subsidize the handset then a) the network is fleecing its users in order to pay for handsets that it doesn't own and b) the real cost of the phone is almost insignificant as the network is happy to subsidize it in order to attract business. If the phones were actually expensive then it would be a massive outlay for the network as they would be taking a lot of the risk - which their shareholders wouldn't like.

I think it's perfectly fair that you should be able to buy a package of subsidized handset + network connection for a fixed period of time then be able to unlock it from that network, or alternatively buy a non-subsidized handset at a higher price.

I don't think you have to be rude just because your false accusation against the kid has been refuted.   Owning something you have bought and paid for is not a form of socialism or communism, it is simply property.

The way it works in Aus. ties in with what Grogster and Mick said.
If you wait for the initial contract time to expire you can request the un-lock code for a modest fee. To unlock earlier you pay a larger fee to compensate for the purchase subsidy.
Each provider can set their own terms, to a degree, but must be clearly stated in the contract and not be unreasonable compared to the value of the phone.

You have to bear something in mind. The cost of Apple products has nothing whatsoever to do with their manufacturing cost and everything to do with what their target market will stand. Apple design (or in some cases, have custom designed by others) and hard sell, they have no factories of their own and make nothing. It never was a $400 iPhone nor is it a $1100 iPhone. They are only market prices that Apple priced them at.

Apple *could* use standard SoC devices. They *could* use bigger batteries. They *could* use standard connectors, but their choice is to sacrifice things to get style, as they perceive (and rightly so) that their target market requires style. They do have some excellent stuff, I'm not rubbishing it, but it's priced on their terms. If you want to buy into the Apple experience then you pay for it. Simples. :)

There is no black and white in the world. Just shades of grey.
But there is a difference between young people experimenting and playing with the world to find the edges, and commercial exploit of such experiments.

Sony's reaction is clearly unfit for the case, since they had to repair the PS3 flaw anyway after the breach. Apple reaction was far more mature.

In general, it you want to protect your (inellectual) propperty, it is best to make obvious that the gain from hacking/theft is minor.

That is why I believe that, regardless how complex, crypto currencies will find their doom in the end. Too much to gain, and relies on computersecurity only. One day a new Holz will use CPU time on a quantum computer and bring it all down.

I couldn't justify the cost of an iphone so happy with android.
I remember when cable was installed in my street and at the time we couldn't afford the box and sky but neighbors who did had it "chipped" for £50, a lot then, so they got more channels.
It was an 8 pin pic upside down with flying leads and the guy who sold it did the soldering but no interweb at the time.. or pc's, so not published.

WOW it Hurts my Brain to read this "Overpriced" iPhone stuff, let me see if a Mental Midget like me understands :) Lets see both a Reliant Robin, and a Rolls Royce will get you from London to Surbiton across London Bridge, But because the RR cost an order of Magnitude more, that make RR Evil, and my Advocating for RR to Market and protect their IP in as Manner they see fit, Makes me Rude? Beauty of the Free Market is if you don't find Value3 in something, you don't have to buy it !

I had a reliant robin on a full motor bike licence as a teen. You didn't have the wheels balanced it was the car. They stuck some chewing gum on the side.."Oh my days.. too much. Take it of off!" safe as a kids tricycle :)
but iphone was before android.
The ps2 was hacked to accept copied game disks.

in my younger days I Had a Few Whitworth Abusive relationships in Texas, I had a Spriget, and an big bumper MG Idget that lasted an hour after the motor swap.

The Real Goofy thing is I've Always wanted to build a Robin, I wish they made it to the US, I have a serious image in my head of how I could use the tinwork on a Tube Chassis to build an off-road Support Vehicle for Camping :)

Despite all the abuse the RR gets, it was an engenius idea to get around road-tax at the time.  I remember seeing a really good doco on a guy who bought the factory and tried to revive the car etc.  I think it was on YouTube, so you could probably find it there with a search.  It was an interesting doco though, and being car-mad myself - especially for the British stuff - it was right up my alley.

But then, I'm a bit sick, cos my favourites are the BLMC era stuff, with some of the worst reliability and build-quality issues in car building history.

I have a classic mini Clubman, and several Austin/Morris 1100/1300's in my collection, and a couple of Vauxhalls too.  Yes, I am a sick puppy!

I live in the town where Leyland Motors first started. The middle of the town was basically some shops, a church and a gas works hemmed in by the factories, and those of the supporting companies. We now have the original blacksmiths shop where the first steam powered mowing machines were made as a building containing small shops. Another LM building (part of North Works) houses the indoor market and yet another contains the Commercial Vehicle Museum. Even though Leyland Motors has long gone you can't escape it's history round here.  :)

That was exactly my point. :)  Apple have constructed their own niche market and tightly control it. They know that they can get sufficient income from that market, particularly if they push it along the "compulsory" upgrading path. That doesn't mean that their products are better or worse than anyone else's, merely that they are aiming for their own market. They couldn't sell in the Android market, there's too much competition. Samsung couldn't sell in Apple's market because Apple have such a tight control over it. It's all good business sense and I applaud them for it, but it's not a comparison between a Reliant Robin and a Rolls Royce. An iPhone and a medium-priced Android phone are actually not that different in technology, engineering and performance. Far, far closer than the above cars. The *style* is different and the user experience is different (as priorities have been given different weighting to suit the markets), but neither of those has a massive effect on the production costs.
