Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

CaptainBoing: good find

"E Ink [...] has launched E Ink Spectra 6 ePaper display [...] This first full-colour screen from the company is intended to provide a print-quality replacement for paper signs, including posters, POP displays, signage, and other in-store advertising."

while the mass-market applications seems to mostly revolve around advertising, i could see this as a great spinoff opportunity for E-Magazines to finally flourish. at the moment electronic-magazines are limited by the (6") size and monochrome constraints of the average e-reader (for most folks, an Amazon Kindle), with the only alternative being the publisher releasing a .PDF version of their copy into the wild where it can be (wildly) copied. but with COLOUR ePaper displays maturing, and once a size closer to A4 is achievable, then we will be able to see DRM'ed magazine content sent directly to a subscriber's device.

along with ever growing flash density, it will become practical for one to purchase (for instance) the complete back-catalog of every Silicon Chip Magazine on an A4-sized device. or a complete Encyclopedia Britannica, or a complete copy of Wikipedia (approx 100Gb as of april 2023).

cheers,

You are assuming the update rate may be sensible. Based on the article and the specified use cases I suspect it could be many seconds with who-knows-what artefacts during refresh

very true - I couldn't really find any info other than this article. I have see tri-colour e-ink displays (red white & black) and they go through all sorts of contortions when the image changes. OK for fairly static stuff (like what the displays are aimed at) but can't even deal with a reasonable fast changing area (like the time with seconds)

but... the door is open - it can only get better
