That's a pretty nifty little tube-bending machine. Is it the case that only the center forming piece moves in the horizontal plane, while the outer ones are fixed (though it looks like they might be manually adjustable)? I assume different dies (whatever they may be called) can be fitted on the motor shafts. How many picomites to control this--3 motor shafts and the north/south direction of the center motor? Is there something to feed the tube in, or is it done with friction of the dies (and if so, what prevents slippage)? What is the purpose of the two outermost pieces of the jig, which have rods angled in--maybe to provide additional support under the tube being bent? What I found interesting is that; each roller is driven by a separate VFD/motor. I am no stranger to VFDs but I never considered them for synchronized motion. This is NORD product and safe to keep. They don't play the silly EOL (end-of-life) games that some of them do. Is there something to feed the tube in, or is it done with friction of the dies (and if so, what prevents slippage)? Friction but what is not shown on that pic (must be an option) is the idler roller-wheel that drives an external encoder. The idler-wheel is sprung against the workpiece material and keeps track of the material feed. What is the purpose of the two outermost pieces of the jig, which have rods angled in--maybe to provide additional support under the tube being bent? Yeah they are supports and can be raised. This is how they can produce coils for such things as heat exchangers. Overall, very interesting challenge you have set yourself. All I do is metal forming and I have these features on my regular CNC benders. However, this machine can handle certain shapes that would be more of a challenge on regular CNCs. I have been familiar with these roll-formers since forever but they've always involved gearing between the rollers. I could just be out of date but now I see independent drives for each shaft, it's another potential market for my controls These things are like $100K and there's hardly anything there This machine is driven by one of my old DOS controls Here, you can see a combination of regular "draw-bending" and "roll-bending". I actually have one of these very machines, sitting here waiting for a PicoMite control retrofit |

when plumbers bend pipes they put spring steel coil in the pipe to prevent kinks |

Can't get a very tight centerline radius with that method, though. "1 X D bending" is when the centerline radius = the tube diameter. Typical for exhaust header-pipes. A "ball-mandrel" supports the inside of the tube and a "wiper-die" prevents wrinkling on the outside. |
