Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I used to use Macrium Reflect for this also, but since they went behind a MASSIVE paywall to the extent that most of their users have DROPPED the product entirely....

Anyhow....

I know of Clonezilla, but CZ can't make an IMAGE of an OS partition, it just clones one drive to another, TOTALLY wiping the target drive in the process.

I need to be able to create an IMAGE FILE of a partition, that can then be restored later on if needed.  Again, used to use MR for this, but can't now.  I WOULD pay for MR, but they made the prices INSANE($1,000 or more!), so....

Also looked at MiniTool ShadowMaker, and this is nice software, but you also need to pay for it, and for all the OS images I ever make(maybe one per year), it is not worth the expense - even though it is very nice software.

Can anyone suggest an IMAGE software that is free?
Happy to employ a Linux Live USB kind of thing, so long as it can make IMAGES and not clones that take up the entire drive.

If it's a partition then it's easy to clone, but is that what you mean/want?

TBH I'm not even sure that it's a good idea to clone an OS partition nowadays. Windows builds up crud during normal operation so it's always safer to either reinstall from scratch or at least use the update tools. IIRC you can also download the latest windows as an installable image rather than install online, so you have a proper DVD image anyway.

Linux pretty much looks after itself and, if you partition properly, you can simply write a whole new / partition without breaking anything.

Could you dd the partition using a bootable linux?

As long as at least one of the devices (source or target) is from Western Digital, I have had good experiences with theirSoftware.

The products from Acronis used to be good, now they are too overloaded with functions for my taste
in the 90s Norton Ghost was a thing but I don't know if it's still available.

I have been using Clonezilla and more recently Rescuzilla for disk imaging. You can clone with the software but I make images and store them as backups

GDay Grogster, All,

I have been using Paragon hard disk manager (now on ver 17) for years now. I know it can back up as files in a folder but not sure if it will create a single image file,

I always do an image CLONE backup of my C drive so if something happens I simply swap the disks over and I am at the stage that I was when I last did a backup.

Regards,

Mick

Macrium Reflect still works fine if you don't update it. You just have to have an old copy of the installer and it will still do new installs.

Yes, partition, but I don't want to CLONE it, I want to IMAGE it to a file.

Welcome to the forums.

Yes, I want to make an image file of a partition.  CZ only seems to want to clone the disk, and the destination disk is completely wiped in the process, which is NOT what I want.  I want to be able to create an IMAGE of the partition, as a file that I can then backup elsewhere, and if needed, can rewrite that image to a drive to restore the OS to that point in time.

You mention using CZ to do images - how are you doing that?
All I could find, was using CZ to make clones where the destination drive is totally wiped in the process.

EDIT: Ignore.  Sorry.  You mentioned "Rescuzilla" for images.  I will look that up now.

Used Macrium Reflect a few times and it worked nicely. I prefer making a bootable USB stick and as far as I can remember, once booted up you can select which partitions you want to backup or restore.

Hold on, I may be thinking of Acronis. Either way, at least one of them has the option of making it bootable on a USB stick.

Remember the days of Norton Ghost?
