My main projector died the other day, so I plopped in the spare that was new-in-the-box, but purchased back in 2016. No matter WHAT I do, the image is WAY more red then it should be - even if I turn the RGB controls' "RED" down to ZERO - there is STILL way too much red in the image. I'm about to bin this thing, but I was curious: Can an LCD projector "Age", as in - have a shelf life from new? It's also possible I simply have a dud from 2016 era - I never took it out of the box to simply test it was working OK at the time. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

could you swap the colour leads if r,g,b and see if it gives too much green or blue? |

It's an HDMI connection, so digital, not analog, and the exact same lead that was giving perfect colour balance on the old projector before it died. I've ordered another NEW projector. I suspect this one was perhaps a factory dud - I should have just tested it when I got it, then put it all back in the box.....but I didn't! But I was(and still am) curious as to if a projector LCD, can actually deteriorate with age - even if you have never actually used it. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

I have worked with many hundreds of video projectors over the years and I have had a home cinema installation for several decades. I have upgraded the projector through at least six generations and my current machine is an Optoma Laser unit projecting onto a four metre screen. There are two main types of video projector; LCD and DMD. LCD is the liquid crystal type. Early versions of LCD projectors were notorious for colour fade and colour shift over time. This was, however, attributable to time in use; heat from the discharge lamp degrading the liquid crystal chemistry. I presume that degradation may also occur if an unused unit is improperly stored at high temperatures. DMD is digital micromirror display. DMD chips are fitted to DLP(TM) projectors and are purely mechanical devices. Astonishingly, each pixel is represented by a micromirror activated by its own actuator on the chip surface. As the mirror moves it reflects more light or less as needed; the colour comes from a rotating colour wheel that illuminates the chip with RGB in sequence. Since its inception, I have always favoured projectors based upon the Texas Instruments DMD chip, leaving LCD projectors well behind. My interest in digital projectors dates back to a demonstration given by Ferranti when I was at school in the 1960s. Known as the Eidophor, this was the very first cinema screen video projector. It used a spinning reflective metal disk coated with a thin oil film upon which the image was imprinted with a scanning electron beam similar to a CRT. It was, of course, black and white but with further development the technology actually remained in use until the 1990s. It was the Eidophor that got me hooked! A final thought; there are many components in a video projector that could degrade with time, perhaps an electrolytic on the circuit board or suchlike. I wouldn't discount it being something as simple as a dodgy connection in the HDMI socket on the projector. Without a strip-down analysis one cannot tell what your problem actually is. |

Very interesting information, thanks. EDIT: Interestingly, this projector has now gone extreme blue, and is no longer a red issue.....there is basically no red now. I just hope it survives long enough at this point, for the arrival of my NEW projector! Edited 2024-06-24 17:46 by Grogster Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

UPDATE: Just so everyone knows, my new projector arrived today, and the colours are perfect. The fan is quieter then the old projector, and it is smaller then the old one also. Has auto-focus, so that is a cute feature! Cheap, by today's standards - about NZ$300. The one I bought was this one: LINK.... But I must say, that this one is 100% better then the old one. Good to hear, I bought last year a TOPVISION fullHD Beamer , which should roughly correspond to the price and values of yours. The picture is sufficient for my 2 metre wide Canvas and the noise is roughly equivalent to a PC being switched on. So it is audible but manageable 'no comment |

Has "Auto Trapezoid" feature too!!! Bloody Hell..... Put the projector where you want, with any relative-angle to the screen(within reason, naturally)....and start the projector. During power-up, it first does an auto-focus, then it does an auto-trapezoid! Despite it being about 15-20 degrees offset to starboard with respect to where the screen is.....the image is 100% in focus, and RE-ALIGNED to the screen horizontal position. Perhaps this is standard for MODERN projectors, but all my previous ones have been manual-focus, and also manual trapezoid adjustments. THINKING about buying one more of these, while the are discounted. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |
