Hi all.

A little head-scratcher just in time for Christmas.

My chum's wife is addicted to Facebook Gameroom, but AVG seems to be screwing with it in the background.  If you disable AVG, the problem goes away, and FB Gameroom runs perfectly.  Windoze 11 machine.

A quick search of the net reveals plenty of other people having the same issue with FB games and AVG, and most of the suggestions are just to disable AVG while using FB games, which is fair enough I suppose.

There are also posts on the AVG help forums of a similar nature, none of which - that I have found so far anyway - have a solution, other then just turning off AVG, but this is a hassle for the wife, so does anyone know of an alternative to AVG free I could try on their machine?

My go-to AV is AVG for pretty much everyone, including myself and my own machines, so I am a bit out of touch with what is available out there now, so if anyone can suggest a free alternative, that would be great and I could try that on their machine.

I don't just want to find and install the first free AV program other then AVG that I can find, as it might be a dog, so I thought I would ask what the members here use, if they DON'T use AVG.

Thanks for any replies.

a) Run a decent browser like Brave. Remember that Google is out to monetize your browsing in any way that they can.
b) use it to block al trackers.
c) block third party cookies
d) block scripts
e) block all special toolbars, including social media.
f) if a web site complains about you blocking adverts then close it and never go there again. Never turn off your security for anyone.
g) think Safety First - remember, someone is trying to attack your connection all the time.
h) set your emails to display in plain text only.
i) Windows Defender isn't as bad as some make it out to be. Trust it and don't install resource-hogging "security" software that you don't need. How do you know it's any more trustworthy than Windows anyway?
j) use a proper email client that has good anti-spam handling. Use it to sort your email automatically so you don't have huge piles of junk to sort through. It's a computer. It does these things better than you can. :)

Your computer will reward you by running quicker, without pop-up ads all over the place. :)

Get rid of AVG - not needed. Windows 11 has perfectly good protection - just add free Malwarebytes and you are good to go.

OK, I will just get rid of AVG on their machine.
I'm almost ready to get rid of it on my only remaining Windows machine(10), cos the latest free edition has an incredibly high number of annoying pop-ups trying to get you to buy the subscription version.

That ain't helping AVG, it will be driving people - such as myself - away from the product, cos of the nagging pop-ups.  AVG didn't used to do that.

I only put AVG on my own W10 machine, cos the native W10 AV package was preventing me from running a pager-transmitter software.  It constantly marked it as a trojan and deleted the installer, when it is clean.  I had to disable W10 AV and install something else, before the programming software would install.

But I could simply use another machine for that transmitter and get rid of AVG.

....but I digress....

I took Peter's advice a long time ago and have never had a problem.

Yeah, I have now also got rid of AVG on this one W10 machine I have left.
The pop-ups were really getting annoying, and as I said before - AVG never USED to force that many pop-ups on you......

Anyway, I will remove AVG from their machine when I am next there.

I did have that problem of a false-positive with native W10 Security, but I am a special case in that respect, but the only way to stop W10 Security from detecting and deleting the installer in my case, was to replace W10 Security with something else.  I tried adding an exception to W10 Security for that software, but W10 Security decided that the risk was so serious, that it would not allow the exception!

I have uninstalled that pager transmitter software, so then uninstalled AVG too.

Years ago I was a big fan of AVG - loved it to bits. However, times move on. Unfortunately all attempts to protect your system fall over when up against zero-day nasties and there are a lot more of those now. The best you can manage is to use something that updates regularly and take as many precautions as you can.

it is called... Linux. Windows is then run in a 'sandbox' that keeps it safe from all those nasty bad people out on the web.

Even Linux can be hit by zero-day & other nasties.

Intel silicon bugs don't help!!

Not to mention Intel ME :(

However, the Linux community actually try hard to prevent such nasties. Microsoft say they do. Intel? No comment.

I used to run Mint all the time. I even have a set of Slackware CDs from many years ago, so I'm no stranger to Linux. :)

Anything you do to keep the nasties out is a balancing act. :(

Not now, no. I fell in love with fanless computing and couldn't get it to install. Also, I couldn't find a decent 2D CAD program that didn't have serious problems. NanoCAD ran under wine but crashed too often. It's fine under Win 10.
