I decided to give my Home Entertainment PC a bit of a birthday as it was still running Windows 7 with Media Player. I looked at an alternative package as Windows does not support Media Player any more. I liked the look of LinHES as it seems to have a similar feel to the Microsoft product and installed V8.6.1 on the hard disk. I have very limited experience with Linux OS configuration and despite hunting through the setup areas I cant get areas of the software to operate. My first major problem I think is that I cant get the unit to connect to the internet via the the cabled ethernet and although it seems to have gained an IP address of 192.168.1.12 and I have set the router address to 192.168.1.100.

Any suggestions before I give up?

V8 is a pretty old linux system mate now is your computer 64 or 32 bit as that will deterime which linux would be best for you.

My old computer running linux finally died and I did have have a backup computer I got for $80 with a 24" monitor and when I plugged in the ethertnet cable up popped a screen for user name and password. As I didn't need it before I had no idea what the user name and password was so I just setup wifi and got the net.

Now forward to the next day and linux just connected to the router (skylink router) and the rest is history. Now I use Mate and this computer came with the latest linux flavour which I didn't like so I just installed mate.

so if you do have wifi give that a try and in a day or so linux should just connect to that ethernet.

Bryan, thanks for the reply. I believe that the version of LinHES is the latest version. Maybe I am being impatient so I might leave the unit on line for a few hours and see if it decides to behave. (It is one of those jobs I have to get around to - that is extending the wifi into the workshop, currently it is a faraday shield....)

I recommend you to use Linux Mint. It is good for anyone that doesn't have experience with Linux. It is ease to use and very stable.

@Leo,

LinHES is a complete image, based on Arch linux. You cannot install LinHES on Mint.
It may have compatibility issues with certain HW platforms. Arch is not like Ubuntu/Mint, which is famous for it's out of the box compatibility with virtuallly everything. In Arch, you may have to pop the hood...

Although I don't use Mint, I gather plenty on here do so maybe install that so you can ask questions if needs be.

I have Mint and Ubuntu installed on other computers and I am happy with using them for everyday tasks. My particular situation is that I want to install a home media OS on a Home Media chassis that supports remote control, remote keyboard, free to air tuners, front LCD display as well as other dedicated hardware. My first attempt for a Linux OS/Media center was LibraELEC which is a minimal install of Linux bundled with KODI. This installed OK and had a lot of the hardware support but I didn't find KODI a suitable Media Center application. The initial feel of LinHES is similar to what I have been used to, so I would like to give it a fair run before I have to return to a Msoft OS with possibly a third party Media center application.

BTW, MalwareBytes flagged the forum as suspicious, and I had to whitelist it to be able to access it.

And I also downloaded Linhes and I will give it a go on my spare laptop after I get up in the morning (more likely sometime this afternoon... :) )

I usually run Mint myself, but I get why you would like to use Linhes. I've got a old laptop just for this kind of stuff.

Interesting! Which tuners?

(I'm using MythTV with two Astrometa DVB-T2 tuners, having tried TVHeadend, Xbian & Kodi.)

Thanks. I'm using tuners which are DVB-T2, much cheaper & USB (suits me better than PCIe).

You mentioned an odd-looking router address - is it correct?

192.168.1.1 would be more likely, but look at its label / documentation.

If it is correct, maybe look at
ifconfig -a

and
route -n

for clues.

If not root you'll likely need sudo before each of those (e.g. sudo route -n).

Can you ping any sites e.g. aa.com ?

Hmmm, BalenaEtcher and "dd" in Linux failed to even make it to the bootable device list, and Rufus had its entry in the bootable device list, but wouldn't boot.

Might be a secure boot thing...

In the bios, disable secure boot, enable legacy boot (mbr)

You lost me - what's the relevance to the OP (OA47)?

He has a running Linux version (LinHES). It looks to be the recent version of LinHES.

Yeah I know, but I thought that I would try it out on my main box (too lazy to look for the laptop) and ran into boot issues. This PC currently has Mint as well as SuSE on it (without having to do anything special to install either one).

The only reason why I was going to install LinHES was to see if I could figure out what was going on with the networking.

Not really interested in messing this box up and it looks like he's managed. I'll leave things be as is. :)
