Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Something to play with on a bit of a boring day.

Recently I've done a couple of LCD display adapters with the name "Hydra". They can use an optional serial comm board to control remote IO. This is an extension of the idea, using the same little comm boards fitting the same ESP9266-01S connector. This design is for a remote IO outstation on the end of a serial link, however the type of link is up to the user - the main board is the same. Four PicoMite pins are reserved, all the rest are available.

So far the possibilities are:
TTL UART single or multidrop.
RS-485 simplex.
ESP2866-01S
HC12
JDY-40
If there is sensible space then anything using RXD, TXD and a couple of other pins could be used.

Power is via either the PicoMite's USB or a 3-pin JYK connector. The third pin on this is connected to the IO0 pin of a ESP8266, if one is used, so that a link to GND can be easily installed for flashing it.

A couple of design points. The PicoMite is SMD to get the best distance from any antenna. That end of the PicoMite only contains leads to IO pins so hopefully there will minimal RF problems. If there are then a long-pin socket can be used for the comm module. Having the PicoMite in the way probably makes removing the ground plane areas a bit pointless. :)
