Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Grogster said  I have always found the best way to tinker with Linux on a UEFI machine that INSISTS on booting Windoze no matter WHAT you do, is to simply DISCONNECT(or remove) the Windows system drive.  The UEFI can then no longer FIND the Windoze install at all, and will fall back to booting from the USB etc, and up pops your Linux live USB's etc.

Me too.

So far I've not had a PC with eMMC and now it has been mentioned will avoid such.

I could almost certainly have disabled Windows permanently - DBAN is cool! I didn't want to get stuck with a machine that I couldn't get an OS onto though, especially as it was out of guarantee by then. ;)

Hi folks,

It's just one data point but I've just installed Ubuntu 23 to dual boot on a refurbished Windows 11 laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad T480) and it was seamless. Used Windows disk manager to shrink the primary volume and Ubuntu installed first time from USB. The only thing I had to do was adjust the boot order in the BIOS so instead of booting straight into Windows it would go into the Ubuntu loader (where I could choose between Windows and Ubuntu).

Best wishes,

Tom

It's a good thing to always have a USB stick with Puppy Linux on it and learn a little bit about it. The number of times that's got me out of a hole on Windows machines! You can even use it to connect to the internet.

TOTALLY agree.

I have used Puppy to SAVE Windoze issues on MORE then a few machines.
More even then that, I use Puppy Linux as my main mediaplayer NAS OS, and it just goes and goes and goes.  NEVER has any serious issus, and I run them 24/7/365.  Windoze simply could NOT compete, even with their ludicrously expensive Windows Server edition.

In Puppy, install the base system(to a blank USB), setup some stuff, and it JUST WORKS, all the time.

PROBABLY due in some extent, to Puppy being a live USB install, and that it is pretty slim as far as an OS is concerned, but.....IT WORKS!

I have SAMBA enabled so that Windoze machines can see and talk to this server, and it is fully UPS backed up, which ALL forms of NAS should have - no matter the core OS.

I'm tempted to post my Puppy "Server" NAS setup at this point.

I have a Puppy install on its own partition on a stick. The other partition is FAT. I can use the same stick as storage on Windows machines and linux. Boot from it and you get Puppy. :)

have a look at rEFInd:
https://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/

a number of years ago i used it to allow an asus netbook to boot linux when the machine was 'hard coded' to only allow a boot path that was windows specific.

cheers,

In corona time my wife (a elementary school teacher) had to teach children remote.
Most of the childrens families where very poor, and could not buy educational tablets or laptops, and the school did not have enough to provide for all the children.
My employer allowed me to use anything I could find in the scrapheap of laptops, and use them to provide these families with laptops. However... I had to remove the harddisks. These where destroyed.

So I ended up with 13 old laptops (and luckily 14 batteries) and 12 chargers. No harddisks or ssd's.

I asked the people at the puppy linux forum if they could suggest what I should use for these laptops, and they suggested "fossapup". Specially for me they created a version with Chromium browser that would play Youtube, would have the correct librarties to run MS Teams, and was child proof (You don't want to be called every time the children hit a wrong button, and get lost).

Puppy was installed on SD card (cheaper than SSD's) and completely run from RAM.
Settings (passwords) would be stored, but no data could be.

These laptops (1.5 years from then) still work (although they are back at my home now, no need for them anymore). They have been used intensively for over a year.
Only 1 repair needed (the laptop would reboot, regardless if you shut it down).

So I am very fond of the people at the puppy linux forum, for helping me out (and the children).

I don't get the bios option on screen on my duff win 10 pc so can't use a recovery cd or a recovery usb stick created on a working pc.
I cloned the original hdd to a ssd so that's C: drive. The original drive is drive E: but win 10 is still on it but win 10.old.
It could be any fault, a virus or psu or bios failed but why when it was working fine it froze and never restarted is something a repair guy would guess straight away.
It's not a brill pc but I added a graphics card for open gl and a usb 3 card it seems when I opened the case.

Do you get *any* screen display when you power up? Even for a second? Any beeps? If there isn't a "speaker" fitted then can you fit one? What spares do you have?

NO! sir.that was my point. it's a head scratchy cos no bios prompts/beeps so logic dictates it's hardware ie knackered-buy a new one. No, for it to fail like this I'm searching for the answer.. just to see if I can solve it. got to be simple, it's only a win pc...sarcy mode

If it's a PC with hdd could be worth trying the hdd in another PC & similarly trying another hdd in it (preferably Linux LOL).

AFter that, measure voltages around the mobo if you can & want to.

Completely dead?
First check all mains connections - including any fuses in the plugs. Something so simple....
With it disconnected from the mains test the power button by unplugging it from the motherboard and using a multimeter.
If that's working unplug all power outputs from the PSU and try powering it up. It should start up, run for a few seconds then shut down. If it doesn't then it' probably a PSU fault.
