I don't really want to influence this, and would be happy to sit at the sidelines or offer a software only entry to whatever is agreed upon. However if it does stray from its previous format into something more eclectic I'm going to have to withdraw my offer to make a results video. I can easily imagine it taking x2-3 longer to put together if it isn't just screen capture and voiceover. Last year the segment for @Volhout's entry took as much as the other entries put together. GDay Lads, (and Ladies and non-genders etc) As you know I have sponsored and part sponsored the competition since its inception and am still happy to part sponsor some $$ to the winners. I feel this is one way I can repay the great support I have attained from this wonderful group of `eccentric’ and often untidy and aging members. FwiW, My opinion is as follows (I am willing to accept a majority rule on this) I think we need to restrict the competition to PICO family ONLY (VGA, Non VGA, Pico-W) as currently they are the only readily available processors. I dont like the code restriction of the previous entries, (they had their use in the past) and would love to see what can be done when the `hounds have been released’. As to external hardware, I have no issue with that but feel due to the difficulty of the judges not having said hardware we would then require a Video submission showing the entry going through its paces and showing it off to its fullest. In fact I think each entry should have a video submitted by the author so that every member can view the entries rather than playing with them. The entries can then be judged by the video. I like the idea of all members of the back shed being able to vote on their favourite, this not only relieves a lot of pressure on the judges but probably will provide a fairer outcome as an individuals bias wont be able to sway the final scores as it could with just 3 judges. To achieve that we would need someone to compile the votes, I suggest each member who wishes to vote on their favourites allocate a first and second choice, I doubt we should include third as the number of entries have been small in the past but we could if we get enough entries. All of these votes could be tallied on a spread sheet and eventual winners (1st, 2nd and 3rd) awarded their gold bullion. We would also need a place where these entries are stored (each in their own directory complete with photos, videos and code). The entry should be submitted with freedom for people to use part or all of the code in their own projects, with the appropriate credits of course. Let’s see where this leads shall we? Hi Volhout, Sorry, I wasn't aware we had a competition running. When it became apparent that there was a desire for something more *eclectic* than previous years I stepped away, see my post from May 16th. If the Shedders want to engage in a principally software only competition with a small size limit on CMM2, MMB4W, PicoMite + PicoMiteVGA (we can negotiate about the WebMite) then I'm prepared to make time to organise it, though I suspect we would be running it in the latter quarter of the year. If the Shedders want something else then somebody else needs to organise and I'll try to make time to be an entrant. Note this isn't because I look down upon, or think a more *eclectic* competition is a bad idea, it's because I recognise my limitations as far as time, negotiation and organisation. I'm not sure about the entity this time around, some sort of TBS gestalt I imagine, but any competiton will be announced in this forum, probably in this topic. Glad to see that topic about a 2023 programming challenge. Count me in if the contest accept purely software CMM2 entries. I’m not knowledgeable enough with the Webmite of hardware related stuff to make an entry that would require these, sorry. I would like also to submit an idea for the challenge. What about an optimization contest? You clearly define what the program must do and it’s up to each contestant to find the best way to code it. Entries could be judged on code size, speed or efficiency. You could also consider having multiple small problems to solve or optimize so a global score could attributed. Since MMBasic is pretty uniform on multiple platforms, this would put everyone on a relatively equal footing. Regards, Lodovik. |
