Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

OK, initial tests of the new server are going good, no real problems and speed is excellent. It's already running the email servers, and tomorrow afternoon I'll be transfering the rest of the web site and this forum over.

While the data is been transfered, the forum will be offline for a short time. How long depends on how long the DNS servers in your neck of the woods take to update, anywhere between 30 minutes and a couple of hours. If you see the "Forum Closed" message, try again in 30 minutes or so. By tomorrow evening everything should be back to normal.

Gizmo, I was just wondering what sort of traffic the site generates. I imagine with the activity on the forum that it could be significant.

Hi Stuart

The entire domain sends out about 40 gig per month, most from the main web site, with maybe 20% from the forum. There's usually 10 to 30 people in the forum at one time, but only a few of those, say 20%, are members. The analytic software says there about 1500 to 2000 unique impressions per day, 300 to 500 visitors. Its busy, but still no load for a web server, it can handle many times that traffic, the cpu spends most of the time doing nothing.

Glenn, I seem to have stopped receiving emails when a forum entry is updated. Just checked my settings and nothing has changed there. Is the new server completely set up?

Some emails are going out, some arn't. Its to do with the email server learning who it can trust, etc. I'll sort it out tonight or first thing tomorrow morning if I need some help.

Its not affecting the forum as such, just some email notifications arn't getting out.

OK, a little research on the errors I'm seeing on the email server tell me it could be caused by a DSN issue. Some members are getting the emails, some are not. Basically, the mail server is having problems finding some domains.

I'll leave it for tonight, as its only a inconvienence, and will sort it out in the morning with some help from my network guru friend.

Sorry about the hiccups, bound to get a few, need a brown paper bag.

Glenn, no need to apologise. We all know that there is nothing straightforward with anything related to computers.

Yeah I think thats fixed, I had to edit a rule for the email server to trust the web server. It was still set up to trust the old server, not the new one. See the web server ( this site and forum ) is sending a heap of email to the email server when someone posts a message on the forum. It looks like spam, so the email server isn't too happy about sending it on. So I've told the email server that the web server is a good guy.
