Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Has anyone else noticed this, or is it just me, and therefore something at my end?

TBS forums have got really slow - for me, anyway.
Pages often take ages to load, more then once timing out with server not responding errors.

Other times, the forums are nice and zippy.

Does not appear to have any predictable pattern - seems random.
The forums did not ever used to lack in speed when I first joined - speed was always good.

I'm just wondering if this is only my problem, or are others seeing sluggish forums too.....

Yep aware of it. See http://www.thebackshed.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=6913&PN =1.

You may notice at the bottom of the page I've added some process times. These are times parts of the page take to process before sending the page to you. The first one is the problem, its the connection to the database. Once the database is open, the rest of the page runs smoothly.

I've sent a ticket off to the hosting company asking if they could reboot the server. One problem with shared hosting is I dont have much control over the server.

Did a old trick on the database and I think its improved the speed somewhat, for now at least. Basically locked the forum, made a backup of the database, and another to be safe, then deleted the original database, and then let the server spit the dummy for several minutes. After a bunch of error messages ( missing db file ), I uploaded the backup to bring things back up.

This would also have dropped a few web crawlers/spiders, which can also slow things down. The site is crawled pretty much constantly by Google.

So see how that goes. I think long term I'll need to move the site to a virtual server, so I can manage the server as admin. This means I can trace problems, reset services, etc, but costs heaps more than the current hosting plan.

Thanks a bunch, Gizmo, and certainly did not expect you to sacrifice your weekend for this - I was just curious, as perhaps it was just my machine at my end of things....

Thanks.

The plan at this stage is to move the site to a VPS. I've been doing a little research into VPS's and can get a Win2012 VPS for about $30 per week. It comes with 2 gig ram, 40 gig HD and 100 gig data per month, which is about twice the current usage.

Using a VPS means I can administer the web site much better, monitor traffic and server load, perform better backups and reset the service whenever it gets slow. And its cheaper than the current hosting cost of the site.

I'll sign up for a month and do some test before moving the site over. Only concern is the server is 64bit, and the forum software has a few bits of code that are 32bit, so may not work on the new server. And example of this is the code that puts the members watermark on images they upload.

Will keep everyone posted.

I never really noticed the "sluggishness", given the Broadband system we have in the rural areas but I for one really appreciate the Forum and all the effort that goes into keeping it going.
Thanks Glen. It is a great place to visit.

Forum speed seems much, MUCH better now - have you moved the site like you said you were going to do, Glenn?

Not yet Grogster. I've got the server up and running, but got tied up with other stuff.

But like you said, the forum has been running good the last few days. Pretty happy about that, means I dont need to rush the transfer.
