Hi,

909 3300W inverter, petrol. Allowed it to run in without load on and off for about one hour. Has "Economy" mode where the RPM and output is lower and ran it with Eco on and off.

Then I tried it with a 1600W angle grinder. Manual says hand tools up to 2800W are permissible. On start with Eco OFF the Overload Light flashed briefly before the RPMs increased for the larger load, this is normal. I was able to cut through steel OK for about five minutes before the engine died completely.

Started it with/without choke pulled out and with choke pulled out it ran for about one second before stopping. Tried three times, then gave up.

About two hours later it ran OK with the angle grinder without cutting anything.

On persistent overload this gen is supposed to keep running with the Power light on OFF as it does not generate anymore. It will not run on low oil but that was not the reason.

This forum warned me about "cheap" Chinese gens and one member told us of casting sand in the fuel bowl, so I drained the bowl, no sand there.

The manual does not say anything about stopping on overheating and to me it sounded more like a fuel problem as with choke it tried running for one second.

This was display stock and I got it for $400, so I would hate to return it for a full refund; you try to get a 3300W inverter for that money! Honda would charge close to $1,500 for that. A separate volt meter did not flinch from 240VAC and 50Hz during the start up of the 1600W angle grinder.

Any suggestions? 909 will get an engineer to ring me as I threatened a return but this forum may also be able to help me.

Ok this is a dumb answer but did you check the fuel tank breather, or leave filler cap off whilst running, to test? Answer that because the Honda`s have a filter in the breather, that if you overfill can get wet and not allow air in until they dry, perhaps that is so for your Chinese one.

Thanks Norcold. Have to have a look where such a breather is located. One would think that after running OK during steel cutting for five minutes it had enough air. Display stock may attract insects clogging up something.

Wasn't a dumb answer! Tank has not been overfilled.

The Hondas have a breather built into the filler cap, turn on for use and off when transporting. It has a felt type thin filter, that after a lot of pulling hair I`d found when it gets wet with fuel it doesn`t completely seal but slows the entry of air when under load. Runs beautifully when no load present.

Believe its a combination of being wet with fuel mixing with the dust it collects, an occasional clean of it and problem solved. That is why I suggested you try running under load without the filler cap on for a test.

Talked to the person in Oz claiming to be the designer of this Chinese product. There is an oil level sensor in the sump and running on dirt it may have simply tilted to such an extent, that the sensor triggered shut-down of the ignition.

Residents in Walpole have sent a petition to the Minister for Energy with dates and times of power outages, so come the next winter we may get some relief (and pigs fly!).

Western Power is persisting with timber poles rather than concrete.
