This is pretty amazing. Youtube video explains how the latest America's Cup New Zealand entrant is using foils to increase speed and movability. Thanks for that Glenn. It's amazing how technogy has come forward in sport. When I was sailing , things like mast rake, mast bend, boom bend. All these fine tuning points were the topic of the rum and coke after-race meetings. Foils ,well, they were not around in the 70's ,,but you'de be amazed at what the top sailors got around to --talcum power just before putting boat in the water , on it's bum . weight ,,gee guys ,me included, would file down fittings or buy fittings from overseas ,because they were an once or so lighter. We built our own boats , we would hunt around for the very lightest cedar plywood,,even going to the factory and weighing sheets.. I could go on --- thanks Glenn Bruce Bushboy |

THE Americas Cup. Ahh memories. I sat up all night and watched the winning race. Had to go to work next day a little blood shot in the eyes. Just as well I was I/C at the time and could shut the office door for a quick nap. David M. |

Great to see us, the Swiss and now repeatedly our cousins across the Tasman ripping the Cup off the Yanks! The sails are no longer sails and have become wings. What did that do to the sail makers; we met some Kiwi sail makers in Spain during our holidays. Fewer job opportunities there! Well I guess there would still be a big demand for sails, so cant see the introduction of wings affecting the demand for sails in my life time. But that said, its a foolish man who doesn't adapt to change. Wings have been a long time coming, I remember reading about wings back in the 70's, so any sail making company that hasn't been preparing to diversify into wing making has no place complaining. Jobs come and go, its us that needs to adapt. 10 years ago a big part of my income was fixing CTR computer monitors and dot matrix printers, both rare now. I had to change and learn new skills, no point complaining. Yes, adapt for change ---- My brother was a sailmaker, made sails for many a big ocean racing yaht/yachts and small, like mine, dinghys.. The day came when terelene and dackron were phased out by carbon fibre and other stuf, can't remember. Then came the guys like Ben lexlun(Bob Miller) who revonulized the hull and sail designs for the 18 footers ( brisbane icons, by the way )he was a friend of ours,, my father was one of them icons .way back ... I don't know much about the "foils" but can see the reasoning ,,,-- a constant shape , trimming , no stretch, mast bend , and with todays instruments, a geek in the cocpit calling the trimmings ... Well, if one is hell bent to be the fastest sail on the water and obsessed with winning races then wingsails & hydrofoils are the go. But for people like myself who have a sailboat to enjoy the peace & quiet of progress on a cruise or weekend sailing trip, the conventional dacron sails are plenty good enough. However, I do adapt to the times where its warranted and my boat has now carbon fiber masts, mainly for their lightness as the boat is trailerable and light carbon masts are heaps easier to raise or lower then the old aluminium masts were. During news it was mentioned that New Zealand Crew was devastated and probably they will not take part in the next challenge and that they spent 100 MILLION DOLLARS. (Even if it is NZ Dollars it is massive cost) George |

it was once said to be like having a cold shower while tearing up banknotes, for fun. Pretty amazing sight though..30 knots upwind and 40+ crosswind. And winning eight races in a row - can't argue with that. Though its a bit of a jarring comparison with the historical fleet review here ..the big 'foils make the old three-masters look like a bit, well, like bathtubs with parachutes. |
