I know this is like asking what battery bank PPL prefer but I have successfully used a program called CA for a few years, paid my dollars tried to renew, followed the instructions like remove all existing before installing the new upgrade.

Did not work (Seller's Name: Digital River AUD SARL) thankfully I paid by pay pal and will get my dollars back. Their site is like a room of mirrors, contact us leads you back to the page you just left over and over.

Anyway, do I really need more than Windoze firewall? any comment welcome and take it easy my brain is still mushy from an enforced 6 day lay up.

Yes you need more than a firewall, especially with Windows, but Apples need antivirus software too to play it safe. Linux is much less of a worry, but at the end of the day it all depends on the person in front of the screen, any idiot can compromise any OS.

I run the Windows antivirus program Microsoft Security Essentials, its free and rates pretty well. But I dont trust it to do the complete job, so I also run Spybot, plus Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Also my web browser, I use IE, FireFox and Safari daily, and I have popup's turned off unless its a site I know and trust.

Also keep you OS up to date, thats any OS.

Its free, I've used it for years on hundreds of machines without error.
Auto updates every few hours.

I use that one too but it has the annoying feature to take over my computer until its updated itself after initial switch on and I can then make their stupid pop up go away.
Why can't they write a program that just works in the background rather than monopolising the computer for a short time?

I use Avira.

Its free, I've used it for years.
Auto updates every start up & upgrades from basic are available at a reasonable cost.

Havnt lost a PC yet.

Have used AVG Free for many years no drama, but disabled auto update and manually run update now and again(once a week,month whatever), update in wee hours best or too slow(understandly they probably give priority to subscribers of the more powerfull paid version) Also manually scan with auto scan disabled and just have windows firewall turned on.

Thanks for your experiences/suggestions, clearly I need something as I keep getting unwanted 'e' mail, so as soon as My mind returns to some semblance of normality I will act.
