Dear Back Shed crew,

Can anyone direct me to information and techniques to convert F&P (or similar) to a 12V DC motor ? I want to have a brushless DC motor to drive a piston water pump directly off PV panels and have been suggested that F&P might be the way to go. Much appreciated

hello,

I've had a thought about your question ,, I don't think anybody has come up with a solution to drive a F&P yet. Either 12 volts or 240 volts . Most of us have re-organised the winding configuration to generate power .

I have a couple of those old computer drive motors that work on 12volts ,,maybe they are what you should be looking for -see them now and then on e-bay ..but hurry ,they are getting scarce.

Sorry to bring bad news ,, but some of the more intelligent members may be able to throw light on making a F&P drive from 12 volts.

Yes, that F&P motor is designed to run on AC. To run on DC one would need to fit brushes & a commutator of sorts (impractical IMO) or employ electronic commutation as is done in stepper motors - difficult to say the least.
Why does it need to be a brushless motor for a water pump? Surely, there's no explosion hazard
I saw little water pumps that ran directly off a solar panel recently at an agricultural show, maybe checking that application out could source you a suitable motor for your pump.
