I would like to hear opinions on whether to replace or treat and paint many of the 1800 roof screws on my roof, they have profiled washers under them some of these are rusted also.

I see it as treat each screw and washer then paint with cold galve or replace all 1800 screws and some washers, painting the other washers.

Hi Windlight

I had a problem like that on my roof made with second hand corr iron and what I did was make up a mixture of killrust zinc chromate primer and fish oil 50/50 and painted the screws with that then painted the roof when it dried off, that was 20 years ago, the roof should be replaced now, but still doesn't leak, probably last longer than me.

Thanks Bob, this house is now 20 years old and as usual "zinc" screws rust, I have some Ranex Rustbuster that I was planning to treat with then zinc coat.

Since I am going to Cairns tomorrow I was going to buy some new washers, that's a given (only some are rusted) and for something like $200+ I could replace the screws but am a bit reluctant to unscrew re-screw into the timber battens.

There is no hurry to do anything and like you if it will last another 20 years it wont be my problem. What did you finally paint the roof with?

Hi Allan, I'd buy the bulk hot dipped gal same size screws with the hex head -- a battery drill does the job so easy . Have done hundreds of them . If the zincalume roofing iron has rust blemishes ,touch it up around the rust with ormoniod (the blackjak sticky stuff). These days the profiled washers are a rubber /plastic make, so no interaction with the roofing ..

get yourself a 2 battery GOOD battery drill beg borrow or steal one .. and you can buy those hex bits from the bolt and nut shop in bulk -

Hi Allan

I used Killrust roof enamel it does a good Job and only $120 for 20 ltr tin, it sprays good from an airless or air gun and rolls well with a contoured roller. as my roof was a bit rusty I put 2 ltr of fish oil in it as well, due for a repaint again now but it was 15 years since I did it.

for where you live I would buy new screws with cyclone assemblys and rescrew the whole lot it may pay of in the next blow
