Ok guys and girls, Simple questions. 1. If I want to build a generator with N42 Disk or wedge magnets, where do I get the info I need for the proper wire size in relation to to magnet size and winding count for the coils. This would be 3 phase star configuration. 2. Are there any deals out there as it seems the N42 NIB magnets cost a fortune. Thanks. Jeremiah 29:11 |

Sacredsax Welcome to the 4m. In order to help you much, we'll need more information. I suggest you go to the home page for thebackshed.com and read as much as you can on what other folks have already done. This whole thing is simple only in theory. Where the rubber meets the road is where all the problems start. For starters, let us know what your wind is like where you hail from, what kind of power you expect and what design (HAWT or VAWT) you intend using. Knowing that much will allow us to better inform you of the reality of your situation. You're absolutely right about costs; neo-magnets are really expensive as is copper wire, so it would be to your advantage to go slowly and get it right the first time rather than to have to rethink and rebuild time and again. Thanks for the reply. Theory vs "The Road"!! I like that, so true. I have fried numerous synapses in the watching, reading, etc. on the subject. I am building a VAWT and a HAWT drive system for 3-5 mph to 8-12 mph averages, with frequent 15-20 mph gusts. Storms can see 20-40 mph winds. I'm in N.E. TN. The magnet coil design that it appears I want to strive for would be one that made the most use of low wind generation, so from what I can gather, wedges offer better flux field, and the windings and shape of the coils offer better capture of the flux field, though I guess the trade off is the cost as they appear higher in cost vs 2" x 1/2" disks. So back to the question, if I want to use a 2"x1/2" disk, for low start up, do I want 22 gauge, or 18 gauge, and how many windings per coil? Regards. Jeremiah 29:11 |

Hello Sacredsax. I'm wondering...Is the vawt and hawt combined together, or are they two separate mills? What voltage system are you planning on and can you tell us more about the size and type of blades you will be useing, also need to know other stuff before we can answer you'r questions with any accuracy, like distance from the mills to the battery's and size of cables ect. .....Mac46 I'm just a farmer |

Sacredsax Okay; here we go: Let's take it one thing at a time. Here is a Hot Link to Alton's Calculator. You'll have to know your blade diameter, but don't worry about all the other stuff. The calculator will substitute "default" measurements and give you a pretty good idea of how much to expect with the wind you have. Fool around with it a little bit and let me know how much power you want to get and we'll work out the windings and magnet sizes. . . . . . Mac Nothing difficult is ever easy! Ok, so lets try this again. 14.6 volts + ( 10 amps * .6 ohm ) =20.6 open voltage 20.6 * 43 rpm per volt = 885.8 RPM This is going to be done with 3 phase star design. This is what I want to achieve with a Faraday disk design, single stator single rotor. I am not bothered by drive design as that has been achieved. What I want to ask is their anyone that can answer this simple question. I have 2-1/2" x 1" NIB N48 NEH ni coated magnets. I want to wind the coils with the proper wire size, and the proper windings per coil. This is the magic question. If you look at the formula above, you see it is achieved with 885.8 rpms. I want to do this with 221.45 RPM's. So,,,, now that you have my magnet size, who can tell me with fairly accurate or plausible coil - what the wire size and winding count would be. Regards. Sacredsax I only know how to do it one way and that's to use Alton's Calculator to size my rotor with a given wind speed. Once I know that, I build a single "test coil" to see how much current I can produce through a given magnetic field at a given rpm. Once I know that, the rest is just a matter of calculations. It looks as if you're headed down a different path; one which I don't understand, so for that reason, I'll bow out of this discussion and let someone with a greater understanding pick up the ball and run with it.
