Well since the labor hire collapse about a month ago I decided to actually use Seek to find a job. So I found one at Murray Bridge working at the Cheese Factory and after 3 days got a call about the job. Well got to head into town and go for a interview where it took 3 weeks to get an answer.

I had started a job that was local after my service provider found it for me and after 3 days working on the job I got a call saying I had that Murray Bridge job. So I asked the boss if he would put me on fulltime and he agreed saying he would raise my wage to around $32 an hour.

So duly I knocked back that job at Murray Bridge so I could make this local job happen.

Well after one week I went into work on the following Monday only to find I wasn't required for 2 days. Got a call from the boss saying as he was interstate that was the reason. When I started again he took me in the office and said this won't happen again.

I did my best to work in this job but the other old guy thought I was a threat so Sunday night got a text at 7.30pm saying no work for the next week.

So had to ring back that labor hire mob on Monday saying I had considered my position and could you re submit my application where I was told I would get an answer on Thursday.

After lunch a call came thru saying my job application was approved and she said in her career when someone declines a job thats it. Now for you to do this is beyond is amazing and we happy to employ you.

So working at 54 and applying for a job well it has worked out so while we are here my work history

80-84 Fitter/Turner apprenticeship where I turned the job down after I finished.
84-90 Worked in macineshops until a mate said Bryan go Shutdowns where work nearly killed me.
90-2000 Hitch hiked to Adelaide where a long be turners job came up after a week. I refused to work for $13 an hour and setup the super where I was employed by a new phase of labor hire companie. I got $35 an hour as a casual and worked night shift to get away from the dayshift mob. Perry Engineering employed me until Boral took over then I went out on my own at Pt Elliot where I moved into a tannery where my leather skills became the fore. I made 2 products namely a 3mm round kangaroo lace and 3mm leather split bootlaces.

2000 moved to Pt Hedland and bought a 3 bedroom brick home for 38K and sold it for 95K 18 months later after I was married.

I was never a spirit drinker but learning to make my own has turned me off beer

Interesting story. Congrats on the new job, Bryan.

Went through Port Headland in 2011 on a round Aust trip.
I think the house prices were about 10x that much then.
Probably dropped a bit since then though.

We lived in Wickham from '76 to '80. Had deteriorated a fair bit from when I saw it again.

Don't eat too much cheese.

We lived in Wickham from '76 to '80. Had deteriorated a fair bit from when I saw it again.

In 2001 I was at Wickham for 10 days with my late Dad and saw old railway truck sitting on abandon railway and saw old cast iron lighthouse but nothing mention about old railway history and is a lovely country town and hopefully one day i would like to go back to Wickham.

Hi Ian,

When we lived in Wickham (WA), it was a divided company town (Cliff Robe River). The mining company's workers & selected others lived in their fully air conditioned brick houses, worked in the main section & Government workers etc lived across the main storm drain. Our house was cement brick veneer with provision for Day/Night A/C but only an A/C fitted in the bedroom. We ended up putting units in two lounge room windows.

But it was a fairly clean & tidy town then. Most of the riff-raff lived in Roebourne.
