Hello Back Shed Forum,

What would be the best way to wire a direct-drive 36 pole stator for a 12V system in a turbine/pelton wheel application?

The details:
I'm building a hydro generator based on this direct-drive washing machine conversion .

The builder in this video wired his 42 pole stator as 7x2C. At 45PSI and 4-5 litres per second, he was getting 21 Amps X 29 Volts = 609 Watts. The builder doesn't mention if he had added the capacitors as in "Gordon's Cap Mod"

I've done a test build with a 42 pole stator wired at 7x2C. At around 80PSI and around 5 litres per second I'm getting 24 Amps X 12 Volts = 288 Watts. I have a valve on my water jet - the greater the psi going through the jet, the faster the turbine spins. My power output would top out at 50PSI, so no more power generated even though the wheel goes faster. I don't have a tachometer to how to tell what the RPM is...

Would I get a better power output with this stator if I was to switch to a 24V system? I'd rather not, as I have a nice pure sine wave inverter at 12V, and I'd rather not buy a 24V one.

I'm now building a second stator. This one has 36 poles. Given my situation, what would be the best way to rewire it?

And finally - I would be interested in trying out "Gordon's Cap Mod", but want to be sure I understand the circuit diagrams. Are the inductors with the blue lines on the left of the diagrams the three phases of power coming from the stator? Would this mean the battery bank is indicated by the battery symbols on the right?

Hi Kevin,
I recently put a 100 series 42 pole motor along with a 2 metre blade after my 3 metre blades on my motor conversion finally died due to the wood rotting.

Now I found years ago why bother rewiring a stator when it's connected to a battery bank as the battery bank will clamp the voltage and the current will rise when the rpm rises.

I dugout those 470uf caps soldered back to back and put them in series with each phase before the rectifier which is the setup Gordon saw before he went off and claimed the mod as his own work.

Before the caps were in on a windy day I saw I could get around 15-17 amps so when the wind died down I put the those caps in and with the next wind gusts my 20 amp gauge topped out so I put my clamp meter on and saw peaks of 25 amps.

So for a trial just wire up a unmodified stator in DELTA and make sure it is connected to your battery bank then see what happens. Then use some back to back caps and watch the current rise.
