Hi,

First an OMRON relay, load 45A 240VAC, coil 240VAC, soft starter, huge heat sink. Amazed to see how small the relay is compared to heat sink and how it manages to store the logic for soft-starting in such a small place.




This soft starter belonged to an aircon with a three-phase compressor. Hope to use it on my 1.5HP pump and to drive the coil via a timer. Will that work?? Cost $5.

Second photo of an old relay, more a museum piece. Note the fat copper contacts. Also came from my favourite junk yard. Free!




Last photo is a salvage item ex TAFE skip from many years back. Bad news as the tilt switch contains mercury. My guess: If one phase of two phases is out of whack the mercury switch will make the circuit. The two coils have three connectors, the one in the middle connects both coils. There is a name of a Sydney electrical manufacturer on the thick board. What is it really?

As our mills have three phases, this thing is probably of little use.

That last picture just looks like a remotely controlled on/ off switch. The mercury contacts were used for a no switching spark situation, think explosives. Nothing really wrong with mercury as long as it remains inside the sealed glass tube.

Not sure where you got the 'phases out of whack' idea from, I think its just a fancy on/off switch.

Klaus, if it were an on/off switch, then only a spring and a single coil would be needed. I would be worried about explosions also as one coil or the other has to be switched on. The tilt switch pivots either to the left coil or the right coil.

The mercury in the glass could have escaped as the entire unit was thrown into a skip, throw something on top of the glass and it will break.
