Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi all,

I have been given a football (Rugby League) electronic scoreboard about 2.4M x 2.0M. to repair. The numeric segments are made from 10mm ultrabright LEDs in two rows about 150mm each.
It was built in the Newcastle (NSW) region about 10 years ago and has since gone Phut!
The scoreboard uses a mix of cmos counters and bcd to 7 seg with the remote control being provided using roller door remotes.
No one knows who built it and there is no cct diagram. Are any of the forum members from that district or can provide any clues as to its origin?

The big problem is the large quantities of plumbers silastic that was used to seal and/or stabilise the wiring particularly the remote control box which exudes the familiar smell of "magic smoke".

I pick it up when we get back from our Alaska cruise end of July. I'll post progress as it happens.

My aim is to replace the electronics with MM and uM and RF (for remote operation and handshaking).

I think that apart from the LED displays, most of it is going to be a "from the ground up) job.

I took the job on with a great feeling of "what have I let myself in for". Particularly as I live in the bottom corner of SA. Logistics being a big concern. As I live on a farm, I can't just duck down the street when I need parts.
