Here are some test leads that I have found very useful lately.

You'd be surprised how often in the trade, you need to test something that runs on mains power, and need simple clip-leads for the connections, as the device under test does not have a mains cable and plug.

Please note - before all the posts about how dangerous this is - that the leads are protected by an RCD, and the plug is actually contact-glued to the RCD, so it can't be removed(and used WITHOUT the RCD) without force. This does not make it full-proof, and there is still danger here if you don't respect the mains, but having worked with mains now for more then twenty years, this becomes a useful bit of test gear. An example of use would be in testing power transformers, or mains-powered equipment that is designed to be hard-wired in so there is no plug and lead, rather spade connections or just 230v input wires having been removed from a panel.

When I use these leads, I also wrap the clips in tape before switching on, just for added safety.

As I say - these are bad-boys leads - NOT for those who are not experienced with 230v mains power, and for use strictly on insulated work-benches - not for in-field use.

But you might be surprised to learn that professional electricians have similar RCD protected clip leads on their test benches - this is not my idea, and is not really anything new. I post this mainly to find out if anyone else has similar 230v clip-lead arrangements on their benches.

Some of us still use them without the RCD

. My set is the remains of the power cord from an old Philips F2 black & white chassis. Great for checking transformers, or anything that has been knocked up on the bench prior to sticking in a box. So far haven't plated myself. Safe if you are safe with them.

I wondered when I posted this, if it was wise to do so - I expected a lot of "That's a death-trap" kind of post, but have not had any - yet!

As you say - safe if you are safe with them - I like that saying.
