Fishing generator, Honda EU 1 was running a little rattly, wet day, so decided to adjust tappets. Took 2 hours to disassemble, 5 minutes to adjust tappets, another 1.5 hours to reassemble. Boy what a marathon, but she sounds sweet now and has no drama starting a 1kw load again. No excess parts left neither They are a marvel of engineering, but they sure pack the parts in to get them compact and light. Must have small handed no thumbed assemblers on the assembly line. I had to adjust the tappets on ride on lawn mower a couple of days ago. The mower was given to me, had no power, and after cleaning the carb and replacing the spark plug with no improvement, I decided to do a compression test. Real low. Pulled the head off ( it was a flathead so easy job ), and found the inlet valve wasn't sitting hard against the seat. The seat had worn down to the point where the valve was sitting on the tappet when it should have had some clearance. Squeezed a metal file between the valve stem and tappet, back and forth a few times, then cleaned up the filings with a rag. Valve now seated correctly and had a few thou clearance on the tapet. Easy fix. Head back on and it runs good. Its surprising how rough you can be with these old motors, and still keep them running. I have another mower that needs a cup of oil with every tank of fuel, been like that for over 10 years now, and keep on going. Somehow I can relate to this feeling :) . Few times was lucky to put something back together, had 'leftovers' and still good to go. George |

Honda make great motors. Tappet adjusters just like the big uns, just miniature. Been testing it today and it has gone back to an easy starter just like when new, 100`s of run hours ago. We come from the land downunder. Vic |
